My dodge stratus(2001) got sort of screwed up about a month ago. I was on the freeway and it started knocking the engine was smoking and the car wouldnt go over 30mph. One mechanic said it was a blown engine, BUT if that was the case the car wouldnt run. I am going for a second opinion but i wanted to know if any of you CAR LOVERS can tell me what you think would be wronf with my car and about how much do you think it would cost to fix it? please dont be rude or obnocious in your answers. ANd if you dont know please just dont reply, you are only doing it for the points i am sure...
I would greatly appreciate your input and answers!
Thank you

If it's smoking and won't go over 30mph, yes you can say it's pretty much f*cked. It can be a number of things, but by the sounds it will costs thousands at minimum...... you can also do a complete engine swap.... You can get the same enigine on Ebay, and just swap the engine.... The engine will still cost thousands, but it will be better off than doing a rebuild.

I cantell you that if you heard a knocking noise, it might be your connecting rods or pistons or valves or a number of things that mightve broken apart.... Sounds like you're burning oil which means your piston rings mighta gotten f*cked up too.

It probably is a blown engine, the knocking you heard was a rod breaking or the piston shattered (maybe more than one). The loss of power occurs because one or more of the pistons are not creating compression for power. Buy an engine or get another car. Sometimes, they will still run if the disconnected rod goes high enough into the cylinder to allow the crankshaft to pass it !

You can come pretty close to trashing your engine and have the car still barely running. The first thing I would recommend would be to run a compression test. This is a cheap test and can reveal a lot about what sort of damage may have happened to your engine. If the numbers are not equal, or close to it, you will have to pull the cylinder head (or one of the heads, if you have a V6) and take a closer look.

Good luck.

Could be something wrong with the transmission. They are known to have problems with them in the stratus..pretty much all dodge's around then had problems.

If it is still running I don't think the engine is blown. It sounds like your trasmission went. Definitly go for that second opinion. Let me know if it was the trans.

Take it to a certified Five Star Chrysler/Dodge dealer and no where else so you don't get ripped off.
