Actually, it says NRA4EVER on the scanner and they used Springfield as the name of the town because each state in the US has a town called Springfield.

The cashier rings Maggie up at $847.63, which was the monthly cost of raising a baby in 1989, when The Simpsons premiered.
The uncertain location of Springfield is a long-running joke in the series, based on the fact that 34 states in the United States have at least one community with that name (several have more than one). Episodes frequently make fun of the fact that Springfield's state has never been revealed, by adding further conflicting descriptions, obscuring onscreen map representations, and interrupting conversational references. The exact geographic location of Springfield is much disputed, but many episodes make it clear that Springfield exists in some non-existent state, and not one of the actual 50 that exist in the real world. It is perhaps best to say that the fictional Springfield is set in a fictional state, in a fictional, yet surprisingly-realistic, version of the United States.

i'm not sure about maggie and the scanning.
but the springfield thing i've heard that the writers chose it b/c there are so many springfields in the u.s. that almost anyone can say that oh the simpsons live in our springfield, making it relatable to everyone. But there has been proof from the shows that springfield could be the one in Illinois although the writers never mentioned this.

When Maggie is run off the scanner, it malfunctions, it doesn't have a price, that I could see. And the Simpsons lives in undecided Springfield. It's one of the in tv jokes that no one can guess where Springfield is. I'm sure they'll tell us when and if the show ever ends.

I am a HUGE Simpson's fan so I have the answer to both of your questions. Maggie is a "NO SALE" when she is scanned at the store. As for the state they live in, it's up to us to figure out. If you look at a road atlas, every state in the continental United States has a Springfield. So it's a mystery on what 48 states they live in. Matt Groeing had fun with that one.

When Maggie is scanned it usually says "No Sale". Who knows what Springfield means...maybe it is one of the hometowns of the creators. Love the Simpsons!! =)

It says different things depending on the episode, changing every time. It's supposed to be like Illinois I suppose, or just an imaginary springfield.

Price is different every time! Also, Springfield is supposed to be unplaceable; there's one in every state! LOL

The scanner dose NOT say NRA4ever, it is different. The state is never revealed, but they do live on evergreen terrace.
