UK 1957 fashions

For the ladies

Full skirts with sugar soaked petticots. Elasticated belts to pull the waist in Winkle picker shoes with very high Stilleto heels and very pointed toes. Beehive hairs do's. Loads of heavy black masacra and eyeliner and brightly coloured eyes shadows. Stockings and suspender belt (for the benefit of the boys of course). A pointed bra.

Always white gloves and a clutch bag to carry your eye make up. Perfume Elizabeth Arden Blue Grass. Could always get a squirt of it in the ladies powder room at the flicks.

The average wage 29 shillings and 11 pence, the price you paid for a pair of shoes. I weeks wage.

For the men

Bum wamer suits, Jacket right up over the bum. Just like the beetles used to wear. Hanky in top pocket. Hair cut short, white shirt with buttoned down collar and very slim tie.Winklepicker shoes..nearly always black but always highly polished.

Or Teddy boys outfits with brightly coloured suits with long jacket and suede shoes with a very thick sole, and brightly coloured socks. Hair slicked back with brylcreem.

Never drunk and always respectful.

No real fashion cloths for the children. Though they always wore pan velvet collared coats in the winter. Childrens cloths were mostly home made. Shoes for both sexes were sensible lace up shoes or sandles. Girls wore plaits or middle parting in hair with alice band. Boys short cropped hair.

Thats all I can remember. But if you get the chance go and visit the Albert and Victoria Museum they have fashions as far back as the Tutor times it's amazing

Edit; I have only given you an idea of the young fashions of the time. Of course there were the smart Joan Collins set style of cloths for the upper classes. And the Roger Moore look for the men. Roger Moore used to be a Male Model before he became famous in the James Bond movies.

Women and girls wore skirts and dresses below the knee. Dresses for women were still popular, even teens wore them, however skirts and blouses were more in vogue for the younger set. All young people wore jeans, Levi's were the jeans of choice in those days. A pair of Levi's sold for $4 and some change. A 2# box of Fannie May candy sold, on special, for $2.95. High schoolers typically wore jeans, t-shirts, penny loafers w/ white socks. One and two button suits for men were popular w/wide lapels, high shoulder pads, white shirts and narrow ties. Slacks were pleated, baggy and cuffed. Men in suits still wore hats as a rule.

For women, below-the-knee full waisted house-dresses, short three-quarter sleeved cardigans, pumps, curled hair, red lipstick, short strands of pearls, pearl earrings. For men, suits: the pants would generally have pleats and be belted high, the ties were shorter, too, and slicked-back hair. Casual men's was khakis (also belted high) and oxfords (not that different from now). For children, similar to now, but fancier- embroidered dresses on little girls with mary janes and lacy white socks. For boys, polos tucked into pleated shorts, belted high, with tall socks.

Circle skirts and tight sweaters for the girls, and occasionally some pedal pushers. Nice suits for the boys (unless they were rockers).

I dunno about clothes for kids though. Probably short trousers or trousers and pinafore dresses for the girls.
