First, Astronomy was originally done by "Blue Oyster Cult".
but Metallica's cover was a way BETTER than that!
The songs lyrics are about "biker wars and adolescent meltdown", in late 70's & early 80's.
It's a brilliant song i think. (I shall add that most of the songs,
covered by Metallica in Garage Inc. album, sound Awful in
Original ( just listen to "Last Caress" 's original song by "Misfits" & you'll realise what I'm tellin ya!), except "Stone cold crazy" or "Sabbra cadabra"...
But Metallica made them much Beautiful!

Blue Oyster Cult is one of the greatest rock bands ever. Also very intelligent and "progressive", they're known for putting sentences and words from vocabularies, dictionaries and books together to create abstract lyrics - which I find really amazing. "Astronomy" is one of rheit greatest songs and also one of these songs that the lyrics are created in that abstract psychedelic way, so don't search for a meaning, but for images and emotions it creates. Metallica had the honour to cover it, thank gods that sometimes Metallica have some clever ideas. (St.Anger was NOT a clever idea by the way, but that's irrelevant). They didn't faq the song, it was an OK cover. :isten to the original in live versions, it's even better than the studio :)

actually, the song is NOT Metallica's. it was originally done by a band called Blue Oyster Cult (and Metallica's version is WAY better).
