GIF seems to be the only file option that works when making a transparent pic ,but I lose most of the picture's quality. Do any of you know of an alternative to my method that would spare the loss of picture quality and integrity? Thanks, it would be really helpful
:)

GIF and PNG are the only file format that will allow any type of transparency. If you are loosing too much of the image quality, try starting with a larger image and more detail.

I've used Photoshop to decrease opacity in jpg images with pretty good luck.
