Any ideas on cooling down chickens in the heat? Or are they OK with it? They did survive the 114 degree week we had but it must have been miserable.

I live in Los Angeles so not like we have many chicken farms around to get info from...nor have we had this kind of heat in 100+ years.

I can put ice with the rabbit/guinea and bring them inside, ice with the squirrels and bring them inside, but the chickens must stay outside and I can't catch them (until evening when its cool anyway) or put ice out for them. I've put ice in the water and turn the sprinklers on a couple times during the day (but the chickens tend to run and no go in the sprinklers). Any other ideas for keeping chickens cool in the heat?

Ok, good ideas...I already have a fan blowing in the area around the grass where they feed, but I can't cover the whole yard obviously. I'll keep adding ICE to the bowl as it melts and they already do the dust bath thing in the dirt along the side of the house. Looks like I may have it well covered.

The best thing to do with free range chickens is to leave them alone. They find cool spots and may look miserable, but they will be ok. They always find shade somewhere. If you have trees, shrubs, etc. They will go under and root in the dirt where it's cool. Just make sure they have plenty of fresh water, not necessarily with ice cubes.

Well... We slice up pieces of aloe and put it in their water, that helps them from getting sick... Provide them w/ an area for a dust bath, they do that naturally to cool off. Hope it works!

put a big box fan with an extention cord outside to the area where they mostly go to... eventually they will go to it and put more buckets with ice water out.
