Our new house is being built, but I couldn't get the cabinets Iwanted. They are really light oak, but I want to finish them to be mahogany. What is the process to do this? Will I have to strip them in order to stain them that dark or what? Please help. Thanks.

You can attempt to refinish them yourself but you will never get the same results as before. The cabinets are finished in a hospital air-like environment and computer controlled sprayers.I would alter others colors in your kitchen like your knobs, counter top or flooring. It is like spray painting your own car with cans of spray paint to change the color.I am a kitchen designer by trade and I tell people the same. You can, however, order just new doors and facing from a company called Quality DOORS out of Texas in the USA. As of last year they did not have a web site but they may now.I have tried to obtain a quality-professional look after buying unfinished cabinets and I can never get the results I liked. If you know any one in the furniture making business,You can get a hold of one of their fancy (and $) Lv paint guns and try to refinish them yourself,But I WOULD NOT.It would be Major mess and pain, especially the sanding and getting dust all in you new house.Stick it out.You will learn to work with the color you have.Install halogen track lights,a lighter neutral floor tile.I would also recommend do not select white appliances if you change to a mahogany, contrast nightmare! Use stainless steel. It would look so regal!!!. Light oak is all the rage. It is very versatile and can be used with a wide array of colors and styles.

I used to do custom finishes on cabinets for a large factory.

If there is a finish on your cabinets, it would have to be stripped before you could do anything. That would take something like lacquer thinner. Very nasty job.

Then you would let them dry and sand them lightly.

Then you would stain the cabinets the color you want.

Then you would have to apply a new coating, probably polyurethane.

There are companies that can do this for you. Not cheap. You can do it yourself. Odds are against it looking good. Or you can live with what you have.

By the way, dark cabinet colors can really darken up your kitchen.

I find it hard to believe that you could not get the cabinets you wanted, in this day and age. You would be MUCH better off insisting on the cabinet you want, than trying to refinish something you do not want.

At the VERY LEAST... have the cabinets you get installed be bare of any finish! Then you can finish them to suit.

If however, you get stuck with prefinished cabinets... you can order new doors, and face kits.... www.rockler.com has such kits available. I would advise against actually sanding/stripping the new cabinets...

Get the ones you want, or get them bare of any finish, that's my advice.

Good Luck!

Lots of work, time, money and aggravation. do what ever it takes to get the color you want BEFORE installation.
