I had L4L5 s1 surgery 2 years ago. My doctor trimmed the disc that was bulging and shaved some bone that the sciatic nerve was pressed against. Now there are tons of types of surgery, and I don't know what you have having, but I spent one night in the hospital and when I got home the next day, my mom could not keep me in the bed. I had hurt so bad for so long, that once I had the surgery, I was ready for a marathon. I was out of work for 3 months. I didn't need help getting in and out of the shower, but I took it anyway to be safe. I didn't ride in a car for a couple of weeks, especially if it were raining, to avoid any fender benders or jolts to the spine. My mom went back home a week after surgery and I did just fine on my own with help from friends to change the bandage. I do still feel discomfort from time to time, but not anything like the pain I had prior to the surgery. I would say surgery reduced my pain 75-80%. I just moved into an upstairs apartment during the worst time of my life, and the stress and heat and lifting has had an affect on me; however, I am still standing and getting to work everyday. The sooner you have you surgery the quicker you will recover. Don't sweat it!!! Attitude is EVERYTHING!!! You will do fine! I wish you all the luck in the world and I know you will have a speedy recovery!

Well there's different kinds of surgery, I don't know what the cause is of your pain but if it's a disc here's some stuff I learned from a seminar...there's one where they remove the disc and then fuse bones together which takes time to heal. Then there's the micro and laser surgery. Laser from what I was told at a back pain seminar is the most advanced they make a small incision and then trim away the disc and there's very little bleeding and you have a short hospital stay of a few days.

About three years ago I had back surgery for a herniated disc. It came out of the blue and took about 5 weeks to diagnose the problem. I was loosing muscle tone in my leg and my doctor gave me the steroid medication pack (its a 6 day tapering course) and told me that if I didn't feel better by the end of the weekend I would be going to surgery.

I went to surgery and I was out of work for 3 weeks. He sent me to physical therapy to learn the proper mechanics of lifting, bending, and taking care of my back. I completed six weeks of PT and was told my physical therapist to do my back exercises for up to a year. I followed that advice and have never had a problem since.

I felt immediately relief after I had and surgery. After being in pain for 5 weeks. I returned to work 3 weeks after the surgery and gradually increased my hours from 2-4-6 and finally 8. I sit at my job all day and sitting puts a lot of pressure on your back.

My Mother had a Slip disc op - in the 80's - She was out of action for nearly a full year. I suppose these days the surgery techniques are a wee bit better.. but I would take it easy for a few months a least.. and don't hurry back to work..(at all even) .. take all the assistance going .. Good Luck..

Two of my patients have got back surgery in India. One was treated for spondylolistheis by spinal fusion and the other for discectomy of herniated disc. Both of them are very happy with the results.Their pain and other symptoms due to nerve compression have totally gone.

back Surgery is very cheap in India. There is one company that is very famous in India that arranges spine surgery for foreigners in India. They are called the Forerunners Healthcare.I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and about their patient stories.I have also read that they arrange financing for american and canadian patients as spine surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website.

The cost savings are incredible. As a doctor i personally believe that your spine surgery can be easily handled in India as the quality of healthcare available here is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.both my patients had gone to India through the forerunners healthcare company.i strongly recommend you to talk to this company, checkout your options with surgery from them.
