In standard biologic terms, a species is referred to by its genus and species name. Thus a wolf would be 'canis lupis', and a human would be 'homo sapiens'. So to a biologist, 'homo sapiens' means a human being.
Now, these terms obviously didn't come from NOWHERE. They're Latin. 'Homo' in Latin means 'man', and 'sapiens' in Latin means 'wise'.
The COMPLETE classification in biological terms for a human is kingdom animalia, phylum chordata, class mammalia, order primates, family hominidae, subfamily homininae, tribe hominini, subtribe hominina, genus homo, species sapiens, subspecies sapiens.
You undoubtedly see familiar terms in there - humans are mammals and primates, for example. Of the genus homo, there are no other living examples, though there are extinct ones, including homo habilus, homo neanderthalensis, and a number of others. There is even another (exitinct) subspecies, homo sapiens idaltu.
Hope that helps!

A "homo sapiens" is a human being. So you are homo sapiens. So am I.
