We were told the torque converter could be tearing up the seal. it is gonna cost a bundle to get the seal replaced and if it is a torque converter problem then it will just tear up the seal again. Least that is what we were told. My question has a couple parts. Can the Torq conv tear up the tranny seal? If so how do we tell if that is the problem?

The torque converter itself is not the cause of a leaking seal. However the bushing that supports the torque converter in the pump can spin out & contact the seal . This will make it leak., as well as damaging the torq. conv. neck and possibly ruining the pump.
There are also other areas in the bell housing that transmission fluid can leak from....the pump bolts coming loose or the pump o-ring. Typically on most of the Chrysler transmissions I've worked on for front leaks, the cause is the pump O-Ring. After time, the heat will cause the o-ring to get hard & brittle and it shrinks. This is assuming the tranny has not been worked on in the past.
In any case, this type of leak will require transmission removal.

If it was the torq converter the car wouldn't come out of gear. It would make up a lot of noise. You will have to drop the transmission to see if the converter is tearing up the seal. But is does not sound likely.

Yes - it can tear up the seal
Taking the transmission out is the only way to be sure (big$$$)
How much is it leaking? If it is a high mileage car you might consider just continuing to top the fluid off till you dump it

only way to tell is a visual inspection of the seal if the tranny was out of the vehicle before the seal may have been damaged when it was instaled or the tranny reinstaled
