Menstruation is when the lining from inside your uterus sheds to prepare itself for the next cycle when pregnancy may occur, as such uterus lining is the main 'waste' that comes from your vagina during menstruation, the blood is secondary.
The bits you are seeing are larger pieces of the uterus lining and this is perfectly normal, a lot of people call these 'clots' but they are not actually clots, menstrual blood has fewer platelets (within the blood that causes clotting of the blood) than normal blood so it does not clot as easily as if it did it could cause problems when your period comes.
It might be a good idea to talk to an older girl or women about menstruation, get yourself some books or look at some web sites, a good web site to start off with is http://www.scarleteen.com - it is very important you know about your body so that you can take care of your health.

This is TOTALLY normal. When you have your period, it just means that an egg that is not fertilized has been released and that the uterus tissue is coming off along with it, because it's not needed. Thats why we even get periods and menstrual cycles and whatnot. The weirdish reddish-black clumps of softish you-dont-know-what is just pieces of uterus tissue and it's completely normal. Think of it as a renewal period.
By the way, does this give you a lot of pain or just regular menstrual cramps?

Remember that your period is not bleeding in the same way that cutting yourself is. When you have your period you are shedding the lining around your uterus and you are passing the unfertilized egg - so there is blood and tissue - the result being clumps. If you are having unusually long periods or you are in a lot of pain - talk to your parents or doctor but otherwise you are doing fine. And even if there is a problem, it does not necessarily signify that you have an STD.

Blood clots are normal, especially after you wake up in the morning, it happens when the blood pools in the uterus and then it clots, then when you are upright and walking around they come out. Don't worry!!

HI HONEY, I'M 40 YRS. OLD AND I'VE BEEN WERE YOU ARE!! MY MOM WOULD NOT TAKE ME TO THE DR'S. YOU NEED TO HAVE YOUR MOM, TAKE YOU TO THE GYNO BECAUSE I THINK YOU ARE HAVING A SERIOUS PROBLEM, WITH ENDOMETRIOSIS. THIS BAD STUFF, I HAD 4 SURGERIES FOR THIS STUFF AND THEN LOST A LITTLE BOY WHEN I WAS 7 MONTHS PREGNANT. I DON'T WANT TO SCARE YOU SWEETIE, BUT IF SOMEONE LIKE ME CARED WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE, I MIGHT HAVE A CHILD YOUR AGE NOW. THIS STUFF IS NOT GOOD, IT IS NOT AN STD, IT IS WHEN YOU HAVE A PERIOD, MORE OF YOUR UTERINE LINING COMES OUT THAN IT IS SUPPOSED TO, IT CAUSES ALOT MORE PROBLEMS ALSO. I'M SURE YOU ARE HAVING THEM, BUT DID NOT PUT THEM HERE. GOOD LUCK SWEETHEART!!! SocratesManx@yahoo.com
