It depends on what you mean as a "nice" computer. The "best" place would vary depending on your priorities, what's important to you in a computer.. quality? speed? price? What you want to use the computer for is a good indicator of what is suited to your needs ie games? Get good graphics card. All those stores previously mentioned would be able to help you with advise on what's better suited to your needs or if you really wanted to make an informed decision yourself those PC/IT magazines, with issues every month, are continually testing various computer hardware and accessories in their labs. They make comparisons. Bring out the pros and the cons and give it an overall rating. They're usually pretty easy to understand, explaining the reasons why a particular feature is not as good as another. You then get a better understanding of what the features are and also what they do well and what the consequences are to you when they're more of an inferior quality. it also takes everything into consideration e.g quality, price, etc. and comes back with an overall rating. It gets summarised right down to the "best buy" out of the lot as well as a "highly recommended" category

Fry's is the mega store for computers and they have very good prices, the salespeople are knowledgeable and helpful. Go during the week if possible. They are very busy on the weekend. If you can't get to a store, a great online site to buy computers from is NewEgg.com. And depending on what state you live in you may save sales tax which will cover any shipping charges.

I bought my mother an emachine with 17' flat screen @ Best Buy for $650. She loves it. It runs great and hasn't had a single problem with it. She doesn't do much with it besides play AOL games, answer emails and banking.
So, if you are just doing the basics, I would recommend them. That or Dell makes a pretty good one and they always have specials.

I have an even better deal for you. Dell offers something called "dent and scratched models." These may have a small cosmetic defect on the outside of the computer case. This defect is usually covered by your computer desk. Dell guarantees that the computer will work exactly the same as any of their other computers. A co-worker of mine did this, and his works great!

As Millie answered, the outlet at the dell.com has scratched & dented. I just received mine and it is fine. Very minor cosmetic, but the machine runs great. The price is fantastic. You buy the computer separate from the monitor. They also have refurbished.
