There was a time (Pre-Crisis) when I would have said they were equal; but now I would have to say that Superman is not as cosmically powerful anymore. (I mean, come on! they used to have him blowing out supernovas with his super breath! What he really was, was 'Super-natural-man'. He just plain broke the laws of physics.)

Given the way that Superman has been downpowered, and the way Flash's speed has been explained, I would have to say Flash is faster. Flash is integrated with the Speed Force and Superman is not. Superman probably does not have as great acceleration (though I don't have any trouble believing that he can get up to lightspeed, it just takes him a while.)

Superman's flight, like most of the rest of his powers, comes from an engineered biosystem that works in parallel with his natural bodily systems. (Kryptonians have been born with these systems in place for so many generations that they have forgotten that they are the result of prenatal bioengineering [the 'gestation matrix'] and not evolution.) Thus, Superman's psionic strength, invulnerability (force field), etc.

The flight is a negation of gravity along with reactionless thrust, probably caused by the mental manipulation of electron spin within implanted room-temerature superconductor loops with circulating Bose-Einstein condensate currents within them.

Having said that, I think Flash is the fastest. They used to have these ******** Flash-Superman races every so often, and they would have to throw all sorts of roadblocks in the way so it wouldn't be over in a split second, or havde it out in space, oslt.
there was even a time when they lost their powers on one of these 'races' and Flash won by crawling to the finish line! I think that Flash could now win over any reasonable course. Say, to Pluto and back.

The world may never know.
Depending on which flash you use (there have been at least four of them) and which version of Superman (Golden age, Modern Age, Pre-Crisis, Post-Crisis, Current) the outcome changes drastically.

Plus you have to factor in corse length, terrain and obsticals. Over a short distance The Flash could probally beat any Superman except Pre-Crisis. This is because Pre-Crisis Superman was the BEST hero DC had. By their own admission whatever someone else could do Superman could do it better.
Over a very long course they'd proabbly be almost even. Since they both have near light speed capabilities at their maximum speeds. Again this goes to the Flash, though. I'm not a very big DC follower but the way i understand it is that the Flash taps into a power called the Speed Force. This emables him to go faster and faster. It would be this factor that lets him out run Supes, even if it is just by a little bit.

Obviously The Flash. Superman powers are just normal human abbilities overpowered so he has alimit of strength, speed, etc. The Flash on the other hand doen't have that limit, so technically he is faster, but he's not stupid ( enough ) to run at light-speed because he could travel through time, end up in a different dimension or even alterate his body's molecules enough to desintegrate. So in conclution The Flash is faster but it's not wise to use his full speed capacity, plus he's won several races against Superman.

Whenever they race, it's always a tie. Every time in the comics and the cartoons, I always feel ripped off.

In the new continuity, Superman isn't fast enough to change the rotation of the Earth. The Superman movie from 1978 got it wrong, at that time Superman couldn't do that anymore, but Richard Donnar didn't pay attention.

How the hell does that get a thumbs down? Ever read a Superman comic? Because I've got to tell you, I've been reading them for about 26 years.

FLASH and i got my facts
- flash can go as fast as the speed of light, superman cant and dont relate this question to what you see in the films. One episode in justice league flash even said he was faster than superman and noone disputed it.

Superman has raced all three of the previous Flashes (Jay Garrick, Barry Allen, and Wally West) in the comics.
He has either tied or lost, never won.
A contest against the new Flash has yet to be published.

The Flash.
He is connected to the Speed Force, where Superman is just fast.
