Okay, ready for a long post? I've included tips on visiting the make-up counter and on doing it yourself. Most important thing to keep in mind: Less is more. Remember that most women spend a lot of time trying to look like they're not wearing make up at all.

1. Your best bet is to go to a department store and get some advice on application from one of the women behind the counter.
* Make sure you like the way she has applied her own make-up.
* Pay attention to the techniques she uses and don't be afraid to ask her to show you how. If she does the left eye, ask if she will show you how to do the right eye yourself.
* Don't let her pressure you into buying products. Tell her you want to see how it all looks in sunlight and after you've worn it for a few hours. Have her write down the product names and colors in case you do want to come back. Just remember, you're there to learn, not to overspend.
* Go on a weekday or early in the morning when the stores are less busy.
* If you're overwhelmed by the options, start at Clinique. They tend to sell a natural look. I don't love their products but they tend to be user friendly.

2. Do-it-yourself

FOUNDATION/CONCEALER: This is the toughest for beginners. If you don't have problem skin, skip it! (I would if I could :) The most important rule?
BLEND, BLEND, BLEND! Especially near the temples and jaw-line. Use some on your neck. You don't want your face to be a different color than the rest of you.

* Unless your skin really needs it, don't use an all-over foundation. Use a concealer or just use foundation where you need it.

* If you have dry skin, stay away from powders. If you have oily skin, try an oil-free pressed powder and buy some blotting papers (WITHOUT powder) so that you can keep from getting greasy.

* Again, when it comes to foundation, less is more. Problems in texture just tend to look worse when you cake concealer or foundation over them. If you're just looking to even out a bit, there are some really nice sheer foundations and tinted moisturizers out there. But if you have great skin, then SKIP IT altogether.

*Concealer goes on AFTER foundation. USE A SMALL BRUSH and dab it on to a blemish. Let it sit for a couple of minutes, then blend with your finger by dabbing/blotting.

CHOOSING COLORS
First, take a look at your wardrobe. What colors do you look best in? If you're not sure, then first figure out if you look best in warm (orange, brown, army green, yellow) or cool colors (white, blue, black, dark red). Which set of colors makes your skin look healthy and glowing? Which makes you look washed out? This will help you most in choosing lip color and blush.

MASCARA
COLOR: Black (real black, not brown black) works best on everyone except very pale blondes.
APPLICATION: Start at the base of your lashes and wiggle the brush all the way to the ends.
TIPS/BRANDS: Don't waste your money on expensive mascara. It's an absolute rip-off. I like Max Factor's "Stretch & Separate" for a more natural look. For high drama (and ONLY for evening) try Max Factor's Lash Perfection.
ADVANCED: Curl your lashes. Use a metal eyelash curler. Start at the base of the lashes and work your way out (press, release, press, release). Once you've mastered that, you can try warming the curler with a hair-dryer for a few seconds before you curl. This makes the curl last longer.
NOTE: If you have thick, dark lashes...lucky you! You can skip the mascara and just curl your lashes.

SHADOW
I suggest beginners skip the shadow. It really isn't necessary, particularly for day. If you want to experiment with a natural look, try the new eye shadow sets from Almay. They're co-ordinated for different eye colors. For evening, depending on where you're going, all rules are off. I've used everything from smudgy black, to warm neutrals, to hot pink.

CHEEKS
COLOR: This is where skin tone comes most into play. Keep it simple: Peach, Pink, or Bronzer. Which makes you look healthy? To me, it's the difference between a pretty flush and a sunburn.
TIPS/BRANDS: I love cream blushes (Stila is expensive but their convertible color compacts last forever). I think they give a really healthy, natural glow. They're also easy to work with. Tints/stains are great because they last but they're a little trickier to apply. (Benefit's original Benetint looks intense in the bottle but it looks good on everyone. Again, expensive, but lasts forever.) Powder blushes are best for a finished, evening look.
APPLICATION: Fingertips for cream or tint, big natural bristle brush for powder. Look into the mirror and smile so you can clearly see the apples of your cheeks. Apply blush to the apples and BLEND. Again, think of a flushed cheek. You don't want to look spotty. START LIGHT! You can always add more, but taking blush off is a pain.
ADVANCED; If using a powder, consider brushing a bit on the bridge of your nose and your temples. Great for bronzer.

LIPS
A great general rule that you'll hear everywhere is to choose one feature to emphasize. In other words, if you're doing heavy eyes, do a natural lip. Good to keep in mind.
COLOR: See cheeks.
TIPS/APPLICATION: Glosses are most forgiving for beginners. Unfortunately, glosses rub off pretty easily. For more color, line your lips and FILL your lips in with the same color. Top with gloss. If you use a tint or stain like Benetint, you can easily coordinate with your cheeks for a natural look, no liner required. Sheer colors are a nice place to start, too. I have friends with your coloring that swear by Black Honey, by Clinique. But I'd start with the Neutrogena sheers in the drugstore.
ADVANCED: Matte and long-wear colors. Make sure your lips are smooth and not dry or chapped. Line and fill, apply lipstick, blot with a tissue. Oh, and no matter what they claim, long-wear lipsticks still dry your lips out.
NOTE: Red lipstick can look so gorgeous and polished but finding the RIGHT red is tough. This is when skin tone really comes into play. Cherry red? Tomato red? Wine red? Whichever you choose, buy a liner in the same color, line and fill before you apply the lipstick. (Some people are starting to line and fill after they apply. This can work but it depends on the particular products you're using.) The liner is necessary because it will help keep your lips neat and avoid the look of the red "bleeding" past your lip line. You can tell you've chosen the wrong red when you look in the mirror and all you see is the color, like your lips are stuck on your face. A good red augments your look instead of dominating it.

EYE LINER
This is really for the advanced. Unless you have a steady hand, it can be tough to make eye-liner look natural. I like to pull my lid taut when I apply. You're probably best starting off with a thick, soft liner that will allow you to blend to give a softer line. If you want a more precise look, hit the M.A.C. counter and get them to show you how to apply gel liner with an angled brush. This is tough to master but it looks phenomenal. If you want to line the lower lid...well, I like to line the inner lid but you've got to be really careful with that, so I'd recommend just lining right at the lash line (where the lashes start) and smudging a bit.
TIPS/BRANDS: ALWAYS line from corner to corner both at bottom and top. You can very the thickness of the line or extend the the line out from the upper corner as you get more advanced, but lining half a lid just looks ridiculous. Prestige makes a pretty nice liner.

BROWS
If they're dark, get them shaped or waxed by someone reputable. (This is a really good investment. You'll be amazed at how this can change your look.) Keep them tidy and use a small brush with powder to fill them in if necessary. Pencil is fine too but use a light hand and short strokes. DO NOT shave your brows. DO NOT create a fake brow above or below your brow.

GENERAL
Beginner's Bag: Mascara, Lip gloss or sheer lip color, Concealer or Sheer Foundation (if necessary)
Intermediate: Mascara, Lip liner and gloss or lipstick, Brow pencil or powder, Blush or bronzer, Concealer or Sheer Foundation (if nec.)
Advanced: Add Eye Liner and/or eye shadow, under-eye concealer (if nec.), additional lip options

And finally, I love make-up and I like to treat myself to the occasional lipstick or shadow from the high-end brands but only because it's more fun to shop in the department stores and they have fun packaging. I used to use only high-end brands. Now I mostly use drugstore brands and I really think they're the better deal. The important thing is finding what works for you. I love Revlon SkinLights Foundation (to the point that I've started stock-piling it) but you may need a custom blend from Prescriptives. In general, I give high points to Revlon, Max Factor, and Neutrogena. Personally, I avoid Maybelline.

Whew! Hope this helps.

Hey, don't go to heavy if you've never worn make up,

Moisturise your face before applying make-up,
I don't reccomened you use a foundation, Maybe you should use a Tinted moisturiser, Which has some foundation in it, But your face won't look cakey, It will just look healthy,

If you have dark hair, Your skin would look good with a light dusting of bronzer on your cheeks,
Use a nice lipbalm, lip gloss and your set to go!
To make your eyes pop,, use 2 coats of mascara on your top lash!! :)
AVOID, Eyeliner, Heavy foundation, Eyeshaddow Lipliner and Lipstick, These would look to heavy & would be to much of a drastic change seeing as you have never worn make up!

Have fun, & try experimenting with different techniques<3

i reccomend to curl your lashes which will open up your eyes, then apply some mascara to the lashes which will make them stand out anymore (what i like to do is wipe off the mascara wand to get off the heavy stuff and then apply- i dont like it to clump) then add a little eyeliner in black ro brown make sure to go easy on this u dont want to look over done or worse yet like a clown then add a little lip gloss and you'll look cute! and stay looking fresh and natural at the same time.

Well, first off, get a good foundation that matches your natural skin color (no oil), then, move on to the eye department. Purple eyeshadow looks great on brunettes! I would also suggest a black mascara, and a light purple eyeliner. Find out what looks best on you!

Good luck ~ Elle

Don't over do it. Go with a more natural blush but with a little color to it. Be careful with dark colors like blue or green. A little goes a long way. Good luck.

well i say if your already pretty then u don't need it. but maybe you should use maybelline, N.Y.C, cover girl, and/or revlon. BUt may be you should just start with eyeliner, eyshadow, mascara, and colored lipgloss unless you have alot of blemishes on your face. and make sure that if u use cover up that u get the right color. you don't want to look like a drag queen or anything.

i would wear a little light purple eyeshadow (make sure you blend it well so it doesn't crease) and some black mascara...a little lip gloss. and you should be good to go! a little makeup makes you look put together, but not too made up...good luck!
