madashell29 is 100% correct.
The Republican party moved to the right over the last 150 years. (the Neocons to the FAR RIGHT), and the Democratic party to the left. So, over time, their belief systems changed. Thomas Jefferson and Abraham Linjcoln would be Democrats if they were alive today, as would many of our country's founders.
When I was young (40 years ago), my family were ardent John Birchers, who were considered "far right" conservatives. All of the things we worried the Democrats would do, are being done by the Neocon Republicans. (And too many moderate Republicans are still blindly supporting this administration, without thinking about what this administration represents. I think this is sad.) Now, the John Birch Society would be considered "moderate" in most of their beliefs.
Now, even the John Birch Society is against Bush for his invasions of privacy, his bogus claim of WMD to start the war in Iraq, and more.

Do you really think slaves should have been grateful to anyone for giving them their human rights?
Slavery was abolished a long time ago, and voting today is about today's issues. Republicans have done nothing for anyone in the last five years unless they have at least a nine-figure bank balance. The R stands for RICH these days, not republican.
The current administration has all but run our country into the ground, in a pointless an unjust war, destroying jobs, tripling our national debt, and undermining programs that protected our children, the elderly, verterans and the sick.
The reason anyone votes Democrat is that they have thought through the issues and found the Republican party morally bankrupt.

It was the liberal wing of the Democrat party that brought civil rights to the forefront in Washington in the 20th Century. Southern Democrats and Republicans opposed measures that outlawed lynching when they were originally debated. JFK and LBJ were the Presidents who did the most for the civil rights movement. As a result, a majority of blacks vote Democratic.
The Republicans may have freed them, but the Democrats made it possible for them to exercise that freedom.

Have you ever checked out the States Rights Issues in the American Civil War? Well look it up, because Lincoln was a Union man, who redefined, through the War, what States Rights was limited by, and the fact that the States were subordinate to the Federal Government.
If Lincoln was a Union man, he was a Democrat! Sorry to break all those little Republican hearts.

Hi Fred;
I think you know by your right/slanted question what the real answers here are.
1-Lonoln was a Republican, but he was NO conservative.
Republicans did not "abolish slavery".
2-Republicans today STILL have more of a problem with racism than Democrats do.
3-When President Johnson signed the civil Rights Act of 1964,the racist dixiecrats migrated to the Republican party, and there has been no real redefining of racial views by them since then.
4-Most Blacks vote Democrat because,right-wing rambling aside,
some white conservatives to this day STILL see blacks as inferior junk.
They just dont dare admit it,powerless that they are.

First there were slaves of all known races, not just Blacks.
Second slavery was just moved from private ownership to Federal ownership. As described in the Annotations of Privilege in the 14th Amendment.
And as always slaves are from all races. When you pay the Masser on April 15th remember you da boy and "W" be da man.

Well, the majority of African-Americans can relate to the lifestyle from middle class to poor America. Republicans political views are usually known to favor upper middle class to rich/privileged America. Thus leading to the electoral choice of many African-American.
But on the same note, this question should not have even been a subject at all, do you not see your country and it's people for what they are on a day to day basis?

Because all the Southern Democrats (Dixiecrats) who were bigots, joined the Republican party when the Democratic party picked up the banner of racial equality in the sixties.
