probably because children are innocently naive, where stupid people are sometimes just that - stupid. But you really need to understand that there are many adults that are innocently naive too, thus making them come across as stupid.
I have no tolerance for ignorant peeps, but the ones that just seem like they don't get it? Hey, I kinda feel sorry for them and wonder how they got this far in life.

Children aren't stupid. In some cases, they're smarter than adults. You expect more from adults being that they have more experience in life, but sometimes, they can be stupid.
