No, actually I've always believed that the song was about hell or maybe even being addicted to drugs. Listen to the lyrics very carefully next time.

"The simple answer is that there is no true meaning to this song. The
Eagles were impressed by the way that Steely Dan could make what they
described as 'junk sculpture' songs where they took weird disjointed
lyrics, combined them with great music, and turned out hits. In fact,
this song evolved in the reverse style of song making, with the great
guitar parts of Don Felder laid down first, and then lyrics added
later.

Although 'HC' has many distinct images and unusual twists of phrases,
there is no meaning behind it other than to describe a fictional place
in the desert that Henly/Frey may have visited on a drug-induced head
trip and not in their cars. It also skewers the decadence and opulence
in which every southern Californian was living, or attempting to live
at that moment in the late seventies."

Found this explanation...It is the one I like

Check that out. I believe it doesn't have just one specific meaning. I think it's about a lot of things, in one. the line about being prisoners of our own device speaks of the way we all have some sort of issue about one thing or another that imprisons us, if not physically, then possibly mentally or emotionally. It's one of the greatest songs of all time, because it combines so many metaphors into one great rythm of movement. And the best way for you to decipher it's meaning (or any songs meaning) is to go with what your soul says to you about it whenever you hear it.

I was told it was about life in prison, using metaphors to describe the similarities to being locked up. "You can check out, but you can never leave" and many others. Others have said it's about drug culture in the 70's in California.

I always thought it was a daydream the singer was having about some hot chick that he wanted to be with.

They have never been specific - but two theories are hell and drugs.
