your best bet is to take it to an authorized ford dealer and have them diag your vehicle...some local shops are not equipped to properly diag these vehicles.

The Check Engine light can be on for a number of reasons. Go to your local Auto Zone or similar place and they will hook your vehicle up to a trouble code reader. It will tell you what is causing the fault code that's causing the light to come on...usually it's a bad or failing sensor (oxygen sensor, etc) which is easily replaced. They'll even print up instrucions on where it's located, and sell you the right part.
As far as the O/D light, I am assuming that you have a selectable push-button overdrive feature. Try turning it on and off a couple of times to see if the light stops blinking. Otherwise, check your owner's manual to see what the O/D light is supposed to indicate on your vehicle....on my Durango it only lights when I have it turned off. But on your Explorer it could be an indicator of a problem rather than just a status light. If in doubt, a call to a dealer's service tech might shed some light on this for you. Also if you do go to Auto Zone , etc. mention it...they might have a diagnostic for that as well.

Hope this info helped.

Give it up. There are over 200 codes that are possible when the MIL light comes on. Take the vehicle to autozone or O'Reilys they will read the codes for free.
The trans O/D when flashing means there is an issue with the trasmission. usually both will point to a vacuum leak somewhere in the system. Best to get someone to take a look at it
I have a 99 Windstar that comes in all the time. I try to fix the same two issues but I no longer charge the owner unless I find a bad part. The Fuel milage is fine and it shifts fine and has for 3 years. He brings it in for service when he leaves town so I play with it trying to figure out what is the issue. I have narrowed it down to a vacuum leak. But where beats me. It may be a faulty processor........You might think about taking the bulbs out....
I have all the same gadgets and gizmos of the "dealerships" they can't figure it out either. If you get it fixed....enlighten us all...

the check engine light is there for a purpose to keep you from messing up the engine and all. you said the o/d light was blinking. there is something wrong with the tranny that is why the check engine light came back on. i would advise you to take it to a dealer not a shade tree mechanics. before you have to replace your transmission. the explorer has a sensor on everything just about. it cost about 60 bucks for them to diagnose your problem then you can decide what you re doing.

On ford trucks and SUV's, they have an over-drive button, that you can disengage your overdrive....if the indicator light is flashing, that means that your explorer is detecting a problem or potential problem with your automatic transmission....take it to Ford immediately, mechanics at smaller shops will run your bill way up...then tell you the same thing. I know I had a 1999 Expedition, that did the same thing. Good Luck!

If the check engine light remains on steadily, get it to a mechanic to find out what's going on. If it's blinking all the time, take it the mechanic NOW.

It can mean any of a host of problems. When it's come on in my 2000 car, it has meant
1) a broken bearing in the transmission
2) problem with the oxygen sensor

And some cars have it set so it goes off at pre-determined mileage to remind you to have service.

Or the light itself could be faulty and going off for no good reason

O/D light. Are you in OD when it blinks? or could it be telling you this would be a good time to shift into OD?

I have an '02 Ranger and the overdrive light blinking tells you to turn off your overdrive. Your check engine lite now that is something else.

The most common cause of a check engine light is the gas cap is loose or you filled the tank with the engine running. these lights are related to emission and fuel problems. May be an oxygen sensor also

there's a problem in your transmission if the o/d light is blinking. I'm surprised your mechanic cleared the codes and not tell you what code came up as.

Contact the mechanic and ask him what did the code that he cleared translate to. Correct the problem per the code then see what happens. Jim

engine light on- could be because of the blinking o/d light. i also had the same problem with my car, blinking o/d light. that time my speedometer is not working because of a broken speedo cable. after replacing the speedo cable, the blinking is gone. it seems the speed sensor sensed that the car is not moving bec of the speedometer reading always zero.
