Listen to how people with a more desirable way of pronouncing words speak. Then practice that - sound out words slowly.
The reason you have an accent is because your muscles that control your speech have been trained in certain rules and ways of saying sounds. American English has a different set of rules and phonics than, say, Arabic. So a native Arabic speaker would have to learn how to say American words just like learning to ride a bike - slowly.
As you gain confidence, speed up your practice words.

You lose your distinction when you lose your accent, but you can practice and listen over and over again. If you have never trained your mouth muscles to speak English with an English or American accent, then you have a big challenge ahead of you.
Mostly, conquering your accent is up to your ear. You need to hear how you want to sound and mimic it, sound by sound. I have known many non-American natives and only ones who can HEAR the nuances and eliminate their own achieve speaking English with a natural sound.
Also, those who speak English at a very young age can 'train' their mouths to sound more natural easier.

the later in life you learn a new language, the least likely you are to lose your accent.
how to speak is learned at a very early stage in life and is woven into who you are.
practice speaking english as much as you can, if the accent does not go away, that fine (its who you are)
remember that you even US born persons have an accent. if you go to NY, boston, alabama, texas and california, you will hear all different accents and some you will understand easily, some you will have to get used to

A decade ago to learn English, you had to attend costly English classes or purchase course material like tapes and books. Now you can learn English for free from the comfort of your home using the internet. The BBC and the British Council offer a number of online courses which teach written and spoken English. You can also improve your English by watching television programs and reading English newspapers. For more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/qnzpt

I know a Vietnamese guy who said he learned to get rid of his by watching American movies and trying to imitate the actors and talking like them when he was home and even at work. He sounds pretty American, so, who knows. But, I do think that if you are around others who speak YOUR language all day in and out, that can be a hindrance.
