Are you getting a sore throat or not? There's no inbetween. You can try OTC throat pain relievers such as Chloraseptic spray or lozenges. Gargling with warm, salty water can help. Drinking hot beverages can be soothing as can drinking very cold ones. Keep in mind, if you're in fact having the onset of a bacterial or viral infection, these methods may not work that well. Hope you're feeling better soon.

Incidentally, a salt water gargle doesn't require a great deal of salt. A teaspoon is enough in 8 oz. of water. The one who said "the more salt, the better" is incorrect. Salt won't kill bacteria but frequent gargling can help rinse away bacteria from the mouth. I advise you to practice good oral care as this can reduce the number of bacteria as well.

And, no, the water doesn't have to be hot, as was suggested. However, nearly hot water may feel better to you.

Try using a megadose of Vitamin C, ie 500 mg, 3x a day. Your body can only absorb a small amount at a time, but this can 'flood' your body with the vitamin, helping your immune system. Do not use megadoses on a regular basis.

Use sudafed-type medication to dry up the sinuses, and stop post-nasal drip.

Take 2 capsules of echinacea-goldenseal 3x a day, for the duration of the symptoms. There have been studies done, that indicate that this herb may not do anything to help the immune system (especially the upper-respiratory tract). I used to get bronchitis once a year; have not had it for about 4 yrs, after using this dosage. Again, use only when the symtoms appear; do not continue taking it.

I find that drinking/sipping hot/warm water more frequently will help in a faster recovery from sore throat. Yes, it would means more trips to the bathroom, but that's a small price to pay to get rid of sore throat....since I dread a sore throat myself as well.

Garlic and Echanasia, you can pick them up at any health food store, but fresh garlic is the best natural anti-biotic. It always works for me and I have asthma, so I get colds easier than others do. I have been using it for years. Have not had to go to the doctors since taking this combination. Good luck, hope you feel better.
