First, let me say congradulations to you and your girlfriend, I wish you both the best of luck.

Now on to your question. Theer are many reasons why gay and lesbian issues attract controversy. The main issue is that there is little concrete knowlage about homosexuality available to most people. There are also many old myths about it that are still passed around. Due to this, people often draw conclusions on the subject based on little if any proven fact.

Another reason is that there are many opinions presented in the world today as to what is "good and normal." With so many religions and philosophies available to people today, there is almost nothing that can be wholly agreed upon.

Many gays and lesbians, particularly teenagers commit suicide for different reasons usually stemming from unacceptance. They often feel that they must bottle up their feelings simply to survive. We live in a world where people are physically and mentally abused and even killed for admitting that they are gay. This unacceptance can often make a gay person's life a living hell, some people's suffering reaches such an extent that they feel death is the only way to escape it.

The issue of divided friends and families goes back to the issues of individual beliefs and misinformation. Some parents feel that they have somehow failed if they're child is gay. This sometimes leads to the parents trying to force the child to change. Some people don't want to associate with people who are gay because they believe that other's will look down upon them for whatever reason.

I'm not sure what you mean by "affecting the children of this generation." Could you clarify as to how children are being affected.

I hope this helps answer some of your questions. Also, please forgive any spelling errors as the spellcheck doesn't seem to work on a post this long

Unfortunately some folks need to have someone or something to hate or judge. Telling "jokes" about homosexuality makes some people feel superior.
I believe sexual preference is no different than right or left handedness, being colorblind, being tall, short, nearsighted, good at math or having artistic talent. None of these things are good or bad...they just are. All of the listed characteristics are part of the human experience and have been exhibited by humans for thousands and thousands of years.

you are mean and close-minded. Didn't Jesus, who I know you think is a god, teach us to accept others and look past indifference. If your religion was good then why to people fight that it is wrong? I think that you are completely wrong with every question that you have posted and I am really sick of shitheads like you. I was trying to be understanding to what you have to say, but f*ck that! You will not be going to heaven anytime soon. You have such a long journey of discovery ahead of you and I hope that you get started right away. it is going to take quite some time. So, I say again, screw you and up yours.

No, your thinking about the issue too hard. It isn't a question of "Normal" it's a question of others rights and society's obligation to uphold those rights even if, in some's eyes, those rights go against what is taught by certain religions or common social taboos.

Take Ham for instance, it taste good, lots of people love it. Yet to Hebrew and Muslim it is unclean according to their religious beliefs. If at some point the issue of "Should Ham be Legal"(as silly as it sounds) came up, would you be shocked and surprised if the Hebrew and Muslim Communities voted to make it Illegal? You'd think they wouldn't vote that way, I mean no one's forcing them to eat it. "But we don't want our children to see it", "It's unnatural and unclean", and so on.....
The issue of homosexuality is very similar. Are there others who don't like homosexuality but don't use religious arguments against them? Sure. There aren't nearly as many of them that are like that though...

When it all comes right down to it, there have been many religious arguments against homosexuals and same-sex marriage that simply shouldn't be recognised legally simply because it is their religion, who are they to force their religion "us"? As for the others, there hasn't been one good legal argument against why Same-Sex marriages should NOT be allowed. Procreation is NOT a requirement of marriage, there are examples of homosexual animals in nature so the whole "It's Unnatural" issue is also gone, all you have left is the "it's Icky" factor and frankly that isn't a good reason at all.

Anything people don't have knowledge of, is a catalyst that sparks debate. Take for instance your religious beliefs; politics; race; or your choice of employment. It's human nature to argue against anything that doesn't fit into a person's way of thinking.

Homosexuality is NOT normal. Normalcy means that it occurs on a regular basis, that it's ordinary. Homosexuality is not normal, but it's NATURAL.

There's a big difference, and that's why people argue for/against it. When something is abnormal, the argument arises of whether it's right or wrong.

Because people let their traditions rule their lives.

I was thinking about the same thing as you today, there should be no social stigma whatsoever with being gay, and it should be accepted as normal.

so if somethings good, people just agree with it right?
what about science and religon?
democrats and republicans?
pro choice and pro life?
all these things aren't necessarily good, but there not bad. all are considered normal, but people still talk about it.
therefore homosexuality is normal, despite people talking about it.
