Loved it then, love it now. It isn't overlaid with a ton of meaningless (but annoying) four letter words. There is depth to the characters, and the plot and underlying subplots are classic. So let's 'play it again, Sam....'

What amazed me the first time I saw the movie (which was only a few years ago) was how timeless it really is. You don't have to adjust to any outdated speech patterns or diction, the humor works as well now as it did then, and the plot and themes are still accessible even today; it's lively, it's spirited and fresh, and as someone who's slept through more than his share of movies old and new, Casablanca kept me awake and along for the ride all the way through. If Casablanca didn't exist back then, and it was made, just as it is, right now, it would still be considered a great movie...I don't think you can say that about many of the other movies we consider "classics." It would take a moron to not appreciate what a feat it is to make a movie that still "works" today--not as a nostalgia piece or a cultural artifact, but as a movie, as it did sixty-four years ago. Lets see your crappy "Snakes on a Planes" and "High School Musicals" do that.

There's always a risk when a film is labelled "classic" that it becomes a sacred cow, impervious to criticism, and then when one finally actually sees it it turns out to be fair-to-middling (or worse).
That's what I feared when I finally saw the film last year...but I loved it. Claude Rains alone makes it worth seeing.

It is easily one of my favorite old movies - and a lot of it has worked its way into American culture (and rightfully so).
