Who can beat a BMW? Well, what are you looking for in a car? Such a vague question. If you are looking for affordability, then Kia beats BMW. See what I mean?
To me, BMW is truly, to use their motto, the Ultimate Driving Machine. Yes, Porsche, and Ferrari, and Lambo, and the other $100,000+ ultra-makes do provide a more "ultimate" ride. However, only the elite can afford them. BMW provides the ultimate drive AND makes it attainable for the common masses.
The steering feel, responsiveness, rigidity, high-production quality, excellent dealer maintainance programs and support, and affordability make BMW #1.
Walter D, your responce would be correct if this was 1985. You must live in an area which has a lot of haridresses, real estate agents, upper-class soccer moms, and daddy-girl teenagers driving around BMWs. So for you, BMW's image is tarnished. Unfortunately for them, the Roundel is nothing more than a status symbol. For the slim minority of us, the Roundel is the symbol for what I have described above.
Jaguar's elegance is finished. Ford ruined that. Ford Mondeo as a Jaguar X-Type. Ummm...riiiiiiiiiight. What a joke.
Mercedes' quality has taken a dump and is only now starting to rebound. Ever since the Chrysler merger, MB has been hurt been terrible reliability and consumer disatisfaction.
Cadillac has value? What? No American vehicle has any value once you drive it off the lot. In the world of $5000+ rebates, value does not exist.
The Corvette is a subjective decision. Are you looking for big HP at a low cost? Then the Corvette is unbeatable. But performance is basically limited to straight-line jaunts, as is most American muscle. The first corner that appears tells you of its limitations.
If you have not driven a 3,5, or M series, I highly recommend that you do. Taking a 530i down a curvy patch of road, or a 330ci through late-night streets, or an M3 on a metro freeway, will all but quash doubts of who owns the road for the masses. Of course, you might have to see a specialist to remove that never-ending grin off your face!

A car no one has mentioned, the Subaru WRX, STI. Not only does it have a well engineered 6 cylinder enginee, horozontally opposed but the engine is place right on top of the front axle better weight distribution. The all wheel drive and turbocharger gives it a great performance anyone would love. Fine out for yourself if you feel the need to know why the WRX is a thrill ride for those that enjoy rally racing!

It depends on which BMW you're talking about. I always say if I ever have to drive a 4 door sedan, I want a 7 series. However, the X3 and X5 are awful, I'll take a Suburban. I drive a Z3 and think it's perfect, so it depends on your personal style.
