I've built this awesome web site and have a manufacturing facility all set up, so now I just need to sell. I'll be putting more products up soon at http://www.christianmoments.com. It seems to be pretty hard to get traffic to the web site without paying lots of money for it. Any tips?

You need to advertise that the web site is in place, put the address for it on all business cards, stationery, etc. Register the site wherever you can for free, Yahoo may still do this. Make sure you have keywords in your html code so it gets picked up by searchers. Good Luck.

Do some intense search engine optimization (SEO) for your webpages for specific content and phrases that are relative to your business and to your target audience. Be sure to follow "white hat" policies that will keep you on the safe-side of search engine algorithms and even in the eyes of your competitors.

You might also try your hand at pay-per-click (PPC) advertising on Google, Yahoo (Overture) and/or MSN. You only pay for when someone clicks on your ad. You'll need to determine how much you're willing to pay for a click that you hope will generate into a sale.

"If you build it, they will come" is not necessarily true on the Web. Putting a website up is one thing, but getting visitors to come to your site is another. The process becomes even more difficult if you have limited resources to market your business.

You can use pay per click advertising in the search engines to reach audiences looking for your products. You can use Google Adwords http://www.google.com/adwords or Yahoo http://searchmarketing.yahoo.com

Here are some shoestring marketing ideas that can help you get the visitors you need at the least cost possible:

1. Create the best content you can with the best products you can possibly offer. Your content is your best advertisement - if visitors love your content, then they will go back and spread the word to others.

2. Make it easy for users to recommend your site. Viral marketing is very important -- and easy to tap on the Web. But give your users the tools. Get a Recommend this Site script from websites such as cgiscripts.com and similar directories of scripts. Some even go as far as giving incentives to those who recommend the site to their friends. If only 10 people go to your site, but these 10 people invite 10 more - that's additional traffic that you get for FREE!

Recommend Site Scripts (various) http://php.resourceindex.com/Complete_Scripts/Website_Promotion/Recommend_Site/

CGI Resource Index http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Perl/Website_Promotion/Recommend_Site/
Hostscripts http://www.hotscripts.com/PHP/Scripts_and_Programs/Site_Recommendation/index.html

3. Rank well in the search engines (organic search results, not the pay per click). SEs can be a big source of traffic. The key is to create the best content in your niche. If you have good content, other websites will gladly link to you and offer your site as a resource to their audience. Check the on-page factors and be sure to get linked from authority sites in your topic area.

4. Send out press releases. While outfits charge as much as $650 per release, there are free press release submission places on the Web. Press releases allow you to (a) attract media attention; (b) get more back links to your website without sending each website an email request; and (c) get more visibility especially if your press release gets in Google News or Yahoo News.

5. Submit articles. Write articles and submit them to websites accepting author submissions. You get exposure for your business; establishes you as an authority in your field, and allows you to get backlinks for your website. If 50 websites publish your article and it contains a link back to your website, then you easily get 50 links from a single article. The more links you have, the greater your chances for increasing your search engine rankings.

Here is a comprehensive list of where to submit your articles http://answers.yahoo.com/question/;_ylt=AhzreGmnCUicOoyedqypscUjzKIX?qid=1006022407481

MKD, you asked the "quickest, most legitimate way" to get traffic. Glad you did not ask the "free" way. Quickest no question is the pay-per-click programs at Yahoo and Google. You could have links live to your website in under an hour, showing up when people search on specific terms, such as "christian store" (and Yahoo had 8,875 searches on that term last month). The bid to get the No. 1 position for that term right now is 34 cents. That may sound like a lot for a single click, but even with the best targeted ad, you'll be lucky to get 5 percent clicking through ... that would be 444 people for the month, which would cost you $151 at 34 cents per click. But, you don't have to bid 34 cents per click, you can bid less; and there are many other keywords that could get customers to your website that are available for 5 or 10 cents per click. So you don't necessarily have to spend lots of money. But you better plan to spend some if you want to succeed.

I'm not doing a big promo for Yahoo and Google; but this simply recognizes that if you want some immediate response, you should be budgeting for PPC. Of course, you definitely want to optimize your website to get the free "organic" rankings, but with the high search volume on terms with "christian" within them and the MILLIONS of websites with relevant content for those searches, you are in a very competitive space. (I just checked and right now Google has not even yet indexed your website -- does not yet know you exist.) Over time (years most likely) if you keep adding lots of good content to your website you may be able to achieve good organic rankings. But meantime if you want traffic you better assume you'll need to start PPC programs.

I'm in the business; I've copied below some further advice we give our new hosting clients. The best online resource for search engine optimization is www.searchenginewatch.com. Go there and check it out. They offer lots of free information, plus a paid user area for more resources.

One last note: You certainly need to be working on your marketing strategies, but you need to get MANY more products up before you'll have an effective website. It's not advisable to start spending on marketing until you have more product; you'll get people to your website but they won't have much to buy.

Eight steps to an effective online marketing program
1.Determine your goals for your website. How will you drive traffic to your website? Plan for this up front, while developing your website. If search engines are important to you, then …
2.Allocate a budget to online marketing and search engines. It’s as important as what you spend for designing and hosting your website. The budget you set will instruct these further steps you should take:
3.Optimize your website during design to perform well in search engines. Make sure it contains the correct density of keywords important in searches.
4.Make a commitment to keep your content fresh. Augment content as frequently as practicable, because search engines reward rich content.
5.Devote resources (your time or the money to hire others) to actively work on search engine placement. Monitor your ranking weekly or monthly in the major search engines for key search terms; this can be done manually or you can utilize automated software to produce a monthly or weekly ranking report. Even if you plan to focus on free "organic" rankings, plan to set up Pay-Per-Click accounts at Google and Yahoo. All companies that want traffic from search engines should consider PPC a basic cost, as essential as paying your monthly hosting bill. The budget can be as little as $20 a month … or much more, depending upon how aggressive you want to be.
6.Promote links to your website from your trading partners, in directories, through reciprocal links and discrete paid placements. “Link popularity” is highly important to search engine rankings. Monitor who links to you, and also who links to your competitors. Get as many links coming into your website as possible. Use viral marketing strategies, like posts or links from forums, bulletin boards, social websites like myspace and more.
7.Install a good statistics package. And review it frequently so you know what is happening with your website. Statistics will tell you if you are successful in getting people to your website. If you are having success in traffic but realizing few sales, that means you need to work on your "conversion" of website visitors by improving your products or improving the functionality ans usability of your website..
8.Periodically measure progress in ranking and make adjustments to keywords and content as part of a regular maintenance program - at least monthly.

This may not be what you wanted to hear... but I think it's realistic. There's no super silver bullet (if you find one though please pass it on to me!). Good luck MKD.
