That crystal ball thingie is called a Palantir and gave him access to Sauron's mind, but it also gave Sauron access to his mind when he used it. Originally he was trying to do good with this power but either Sauron got to him this way or he was tempted by this powerful ring or more than likely both. Ultimately he was siding with Sauron but once he got the ring, he would've turned on Sauron himself.
The fact that I know this much saddens me and I am going to cry now.

the ring makes people like that they want the power of the ring cant u tell even frodo couldnt get rid of it in the end it took a fight with golom

it was the way to compete with Gandalf, going to the other side to be his direct rival, by jealousy and envies , to show who is the best, but Gandalf in the end is the really powerfull magician.
