My question involves Answerers who do not give opinions or their experience in their answer, but only cut and paste an answer clearly taken from some educational-type website. Ex. Someone asks about thinning hair and baldness and the Answerer states only a paragraph about "alopecia", which sounds much like something right out of WebMd or something of the sort. What I am getting at here is...Most likely if a Questioner comes here to ask all of *Us* , it's a good chance this person is looking for others views and opinions, not just facts that one could find w/google. Obviously the questioner has a computer and may have already done just that. What one cannot do somewhere 'else' is get opinions and views. Right? Of course, most people should know that NONE of us are anything more than just suggesters, and if the questioner wants straight out facts, then thats what the 'link' part is for. Am I right, here? What do others think?

Exception: I agree in medical situations that one should say go to a Dr. or give a link to a medical website. But, that's not really what I was talking about. LINKS are OK...not pasted paragraphs.

It annoys me when people copy entire pages from Wikipedia or wherever, but I certainly wouldn't select their answers. Some people just don't know how to write, or come up with original ideas of their own, so they cut and paste. Pity them.

well I think for the most part that is true - people want opinions. However if an opinion, especially a health concern, can be backed up with fact from a website, then the asker gains not only an opinion but a fact. The website may be one the asker has overlooked.
If the question is a basic, generic question then I agree, inputting info from a website is not what the asker had in mind.

I try to give an answer in my own words, but sometimes the 'official' website can better explain things. I've answered many questions with my own words and a simple link to the website if I think it'll help. Especially Wikipedia, I love Wiki! But yeah, when people copy the ENTIRE Wikipedia entry into an answer, it just makes it too long and my attention span is too short to read all that!

But I think it's close to morally criminal to answer medical questions with anything OTHER than information from a specific site. If someone says "For those of you that have had skin cancer, what were the treatments like," then they should expect personal responses. But when they ask "Could my kidney be failing" then the responders SHOULD NOT be giving any suggestions other than "go see official Website X" and "Go see a freakin doctor". Giving medical advice when you are not a health care professional is horrible. And I think it's good that the responders are basically saying "DON'T ASK US!"

If you state you are looking for an opinion and someone cuts and pastes, that's wrong. But the assumption here is that you're asking because you can't find the answer googling or surfing. So they try to save you a step and just give you the answer. It's cool.

I get the feeling that most people ask questions here because they are too lazy to do the research themselves. If someone asks a Q that requires real life experience, I answer it to the best of my ability. But if someone asks"why is the earth round" then it is better answered by a website with the specific info.

There are a great many people who honestly don't know how to research their question/problem on the internet, although it's simple enough to some. So many YA questions would never be posted if the asker was aware of the power and ways of the web

most don't want to take the time to give personal experiences. Others think their links are more valuable than opions and in some cases that's true. It really depends on the question.....

Personally, every answer I give is an original one. I don't take the time to look stuff up, I just give my gut-feeling answer.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! You are so right! I used to comment about those people, but then once the asker thought I was insulting them, so I apologized and explained my self, then never commented again, but boy have I wanted to!
