My computer powers on but will not boot. It gets to the "Pentium" screen and will not go any farther. I have tried to access the BIOS and it won't open. It makes one beep, and the cd/dvd rom lights up. I have had the computer for about 9 months, but the hard drive is only a month old. Does anybody have any suggestions?

Things to know:
1. The computer was built by my now ex-bf who to put it nicely isn't interested in assisting me with this (no extended warranty)
2. I have tried several times to reboot with the same results

open up the computer. where the monitor connects, disconnect it and use a screwdirver to loosen up the video card where the mon itor connects. pull out the video card, reaseat it , ie push it all the way down. screw in the screw that attaches it. if this does not work, try taking out the memory sticks and reseating them. often the video card comes loose and causes it not to boot. if u have more than one memory stick, try taking out and replacing one at a time til u find the bad memory stick. then replace if needed.

If the computer is beeping at you and not booting, that beep indicates there is a hardware problem with the computer. Usually it is in the memory, processor, system board or power supply.
Go to the website of the manufacturer of your PC and look up your model. It should have a user's manual that list the error codes. Find out what the one beep means (it is different for every make and model). It may also suggest a possible solution for the problem (such as reseating the memory).
If the website does not give you a solution, then contact the manufacturer if it is still under warranty to have it serviced. Otherwise you will have to take it in to a pro.

Ya, its not your harddrive. If you are not even able to get into your BIOS, you are most likely looking a bad mother board.
It is kind of weird though, because if you hear the beep then it SHOULD be passing the post... I would suggest 2 things.
1. Clear your CMOS, if you are not sure how look in the manual for your mother board, or google your motherboard and look for the manual on it.
2. See if your pc is under waranty, or if the mobo is, and take it in for service. I am 95% sure that this is a mobo issue.

try kicking the PC gently...power on.
if that doesnt work Do it again...keep doing this...
if it fails try opening the case and find the memory sticks...it might be loose...if not try punching through the mother board a couple of times...power on
if that fails...then its possible that a chip got fried...if you dont use a UPS/surge protector sometimes one of the chips on the mobo shorts....
time to take it to the pc shop...or if your skilled change the mobo...
