i want to make strapless, tea-length dresses for my bridesmaids and i feel bad asking them to pay $80 or more for it when they'll already have to come to the wedding. Would it be that hard for me to make them? I'm not bad w/ the sewing machine, but i'm concerned about slippery fabrics and boning.

If you're not experienced with making dresses - you do run the risk of having them not come out quite right. The less fitted, the better (easier).

Also keep in mind that with the price of fabric and notions - you may not be saving them all that much money. It USED to be cheaper to make your own clothes - but it's not always the case anymore.

Plus - you'll be committing LOADS of time to the endeavor. How much time to you have to spare?? How much extra stress do you want to take on?

It should not be too hard with the right pattern. Kudos on what you are doing, it will save you and your bridesmaids a ton of money. On the other hand, when you ask someone to be in your wedding they know it is going to cost them money for the dress, shoes, etc. It does stink to have to pay so much but given enough time, most dress stores have payment plans. Good luck.

This type of dress is very simple and you can buy a nice pattern for about $10-15 from Vogue or McCall's. I think I spent $30-35 all together (Wal-Mart Sewing Center). I made my junior prom dress like this (with a sheer layer on top, lined bust and tulle underneath the actual dress for shaping) and it wasn't hard at all. Half of my classmates thought it was store-bought except for the girls in my Clothing II class. A little tedious, but not difficult. I would just make sure you know how to read patterns/instructions and know sewing tactics like darts, inserting linings, inserting zippers, etc. If you don't you can always find an older woman who is probably sure to know how to read the pattern. You want to have the girls measured properly too. Make sure to buy current patterns because the sizes are most close to what's on today's store shelves. If you'd like a pic of my dress, just shoot me an email. I'm glad to help. Best of luck and congratulations!

Let me tell you that $80.00 for a bridesmaid dress is not a bad price to pay. By the time that you buy all the stuff that you need to make a dress, a bridesmaid dress at that, you will spend a lot more than $80.00. And if you are not too familiar with dress making any mistakes that you make will cost you even more money. Believe me I know because I have made many bridesmaid dresses. So better be wise than sorry!.

If you have sewn in the past you must see how now adays it cost more to make things yourself, I usedto do a lot of sewing and crafts but you have to be rich for some reason. Check it out but I think you should just purchase them and save you from a bottle of advil. good luck and happy future.

What bride has the time to make a whole set of dresses. Are you thinking?
What kind of hoo-hah redneck wedding is this?

You should be worrying about flowers, limos, entrees, china patterns, and your photographer.

Let them buy the freakin* dresses. That's what you do when you are in a bridal party.

once you're searching for a particular colour, your stunning guess is to bypass on-line and seem through fashion designer's collections and then detect a save close to you that consists of those designers. in case you bypass into dept shops it will be perplexing to discover the colour your sister is searching for. david's bridal has colorings like mermaid, jade, marine, oasis and pool and also you'll seem through sorts on the cyber web website that each and each one are available those colorings.
