My understanding is it was a fictional movie filmed in a real town in Pennsylvania (not sure about the state). Anyway since it wasn't filmed on a studio lot and in a real town, everyone thought the story was true. The place that it was filmed had become a tourist attraction. The whole story was definitely fiction though.

Some kids needed a story line for a movie they were making, and dreamed it up.

It is a movie about a FICTIONAL myth. It is was cool I saw it opening night and thought it was real...that was prior to the truth about it being a fictional documentary.

dude, its not real, but the first time i saw it, i was totally convinced, they made millions on that movie, and barley paid for any expenses....faked their deaths, and hid out for awhile until people found out what they did.
