My understanding is it was a fictional movie filmed in a real town in Pennsylvania (not sure about the state). Anyway since it wasn't filmed on a studio lot and in a real town, everyone thought the story was true. The place that it was filmed had become a tourist attraction. The whole story was definitely fiction though.

It is a movie about a FICTIONAL myth. It is was cool I saw it opening night and thought it was real...that was prior to the truth about it being a fictional documentary.
