You will never stop him climbing trees but you could enrol him in a wall climbing course where they are strictly supervised. This way, when he does climb trees he will have a better knowledge of what he is doing so that he doesn't fall. Don't punish him for being adventurous but encourage him in better ways, like doing gymnastics. The more fuss you make about climbing trees, if he is a typical boy, the more he will want to do it. Hope you sort it out to everyone's advantage.

Just tell him which trees to climb and how far he can go in designated tree.
Some trees are better for climbing with sturdier branches, and as long as he doesnt go that high.. It should be ok..
You cant take the tree climbing out of little boys. Thats like saying baseball and apple pie arent American.
Or how about building him a tree house.

Not to be sadistic or anything, but you can't. You see, kids have a tenacy (I hope I spelled that right...) to do things that would hurt them. They get a kick out of it. So truly, telling him not to climb a tree is like telling him not to talk: he can't help it.
But you can convey this little image to him:
"There's a reason I ask you not to climb the tree. I mean look at what that tree has to deal with on a regular basis! It has to put up with getting rained on, snowed on, standing there all day every day without a TV to watch or a Radio to listen to, it gets little balls of straw and grass caught up in it for the sake of them annoying little birds that fly around everywhere, it doesn't have any friends, the only kind of food it gets is the kind that it has to suck from the dirt (and from amongst worms and ants, mind you!), it stands out there in blistering heat and blinding sun, and to top it all off, it has to get all those leaves stripped off it every winter, regardless of wether it wants to or not! Now it has all that trouble it has to go through over the course of maybe 100 years. Surely, you can give it the common courtesy of not climbing on it! How would you feel if suddenly there wasn't anything on TV and the radio started messing up, your friends went to Colorado to meet someone, and out of nowhere, a squirrel started climbing your leg? You wouldn't like it either, would you? Well, how do you think the tree feels about you climbing it?"
Now that little fiasco would work if he was little (under 8), but if he's older...ah, wrap the tree from the base up to 8 feet high with barbed wire.

We've all fallen from trees or simular at some point.
Next time he goes to climb a tree, he will probably get a flash back reminding himself what falling out of a tree feels like, It's a sharp learning curve

Oh, poor him and poor you. You can't stop him climbing trees. However, he will probably not make the same mistake again, and will end up being a lumberjack. Or else he will decide all by himself never to climb another tree in his life.

Make it clear to him that he shouldn't do it and have a clear repercussion i.e if he climbs a tree he forfeits a certain toy for a set period.
If it were me I would teach him how to climb up and down trees safely and how to tell which trees and branches are dodgy so it isn't dangerous.

punish him for what he did. Use his 6 new stitches to show him that if he climbs trees this and worse things will happen to him. He is obviously not a good tree climber.

Don't stop him. He has to learn, and he can only learn from experience. More practise will improve his climbing skills.
The problem is in you. It's natural to feel protective, but you must try to keep it under control, and not to restrict him, limit his development, or undermine his confidence.
A climber is a climber. Some kids just seem to want to go up.You could help him to develop his skill in a safe environment by taking him to the nearest climbing centre.

My son did the same thing. He ended up with 20 stitches in his tongue. 2 days later he was back at it. Some boys are just into the thrill. I tried everything finally i gave up and foam cushion all around the bottom. Not the best solution but it worked for us.
