for example, if i wanted to know how the government works, how a light bulb turns on, it there a way that i could find out the answer to the question without first gaining opinions, ultimately leading to my own opinion, which is not fact?

I am assuming that when you write of "fact" you also mean truth. An opinion is a conclusion that derives from your perception of the object, situation, or occurrence. I think an opinion does have a possibility to be true, however the keeper of the opinion might never know that his/her opinion is true. Everything one knows or thinks originates from his/her perception. Perception stems from his/her observation. Observation is a taking in of information through the senses (hearing, touching, seeing etc.) which in turn is processed in the mind to form a perception. An opinion is a conclusion taken from the perception; which might be a true opinion if the observation, perception, and conclusion stays accurate to the truth. However I do not think that any human can escape the filter of his/her own mind. So everything you obtain that has been concluded is an opinion, but also might be a true opinion (or a fact).

Well it's all what you choose to believe. For all I know my life might just be one very detailed dream I'm having, but I'm actually a six year old girl living in Africa. But I choose to believe I'm who I am, where I am and that this is reality. I spent ten years in university taking in what I was taught as truth. But how do I know it wasn't all lies? Have you ever read the book Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell? That has some good points in it. Whoever controls the past controls the future. Whoever controls the present controls the past. Every "fact" is just a summary of an opinion that is largely agreed upon, but that doesn't mean you have to agree with it. For all anyone else is concerned you could believe that a light bulb doesn't turn on, but simply, the darkness turns off.

you ever heard of the blind leading the blind? With opinion its a bit like that. The truth will allways be the truth however regardless of opinion or your sense of percpective. The best way to regard the truth of something is allways with an open and questioning mind.
