My daughter started when she was 3. It started as basic somersaults, cartwheels, jumping on the trampoline. (For us it was a way for her to get all of her energy out.) At that age it is not serious. She has always worked at her own pace. She is now 7 and participating in 8 competitions a year. She loves it.

I think that it all depends upon the child. If the child that you're asking about is constantly trying to bounce off the wall it might be a little too much for the teacher to handle and you risk allowing your child to get hurt. I think that the age doesn't matter but what your child wants to do and also how well the teacher can handle kids.

Im Romanian and we know a lot about gymnastics.
i would say around the ages of 3 and 5.
but that also depends on their weight.
3 sounds a little too young, right? well thats when they start to jump around and play and thats when they can learn new moves and becom flexable.
see if the child likes this sport. if not then wait a little longer.

My kids started in parent participation classes at 18 months. Then went on from there. The were mostly just large motor skill activities, but it got them ready for "real" gymnastics at about 5.
