I'm going back to college to get my master's in Early Childhoold Education. I've been on disability due to epilepsy from the late nineties and haven't worked full time.
Before, I took out loans like water. I owe over 20,000 dollars and just now took out another loan. I'm scared but determined to get off of disability. The only thing is that I'm afraid that my epilepsy will cause me problems and I'll lose the job I get, if I get any.
For five years I tried writing and only published two poems. What do you think?

No, keep following your dream and one day.....
Here is a poem I wrote in '86.

Yes, You Can

As I was walking in the sand
I heard a voice say yes, you can !
You can, you know, if you'll only try
Do it now, don't let time pass you by

Can time be your ally ? Oh yes, precisely
But time can slip away if you don't use it wisely
So try you must and if you meet defeat
Try and try again, the victory will be so sweet

So when you find yourself in the winter of life
You'll think back when all was full of strife
You'll be glad you had goals and chartered a plan
And taken time to listen to Yes, You Can

Best of luck to you

Aren't there medications that treat epilepsy? Doing your best to get off of disability is almost never a mistake. I think it is admirable that you are attemtping this, though I'm not sure early childhood ed is the field you should pursue with epilepsy, that is unless you'll not be interacting or responsible for children. If you're going to work in an office I think you'll be fine as long as you're working with your doctor to control your epilepsy as much as possible.

I think you need to believe in yourself. You've got a long life ahead of you and you have to find some means by which to support yourself. Don't be a victim because of your disability don't let it rule your life. If you get into this and your epilepsy kicks in and starts causing problems, deal with it then, you can't live your life wondering "what if". Further more, we as Americans typically spend $20,000 plus dollars on cars and houses why not invest that much and more into your future?

First you need to see what assistance there is to complete your education so that you can get off assistance. if your epilepisy is bad enough you may allways need some help. As far as doing the right thing there is the Americans with disabilities act. You are taking steps to follow a dream and be independent. go for it!

I admire your determination to get off disability. You should be very proud of everything you have accomplished.
