The main difference is the amount of duty paid. I think at the moment its about 7 pence a litre on red diesel. Then obviously the colour which is just a dye.
Yes, red is mainly intended for agricultural use but it can also be used by some boats.
In rural areas Customs and excise do regularly dip tanks by the road, checking for vehicles using red illegally and its not just the lorry's, diesel cars will also be checked.
It is possible to either recolour or remove the dye from red diesel. And going by the size of the bust locally by the Police and customs and Excise it must by a very lucrative business.

red diesel, is only available to farmers, etc. and it has less tax on it.

red diesel is not allowed to be used on the roads, and U can be fined if Ur found using it, tractor have a switch in the engine bay, so that they can switch between red and white (normal) diesel

red diesel has a special dye in it which makes it a reddy colour, it can be filtered out, but it is extremely hard to do, and the cost of doing it, makes it not worth doing as it brings the cost in line with white diesel

Normal diesel is for cars! Red diesel is for things like tractors! Its illegal to put red diesel in cars something to do with the amount of tax you pay I think!

Red diesel is merely normal diesel that is "dyed". The reason is for road tax purposes. The red diesel is made for off road use (construction, farming etc.) and is sold at a cheaper price (not taxed). If you are a truck driver and you get pulled by the police they may take your fuel cap off to see if it is dyed or not. If it is dyed you will probably recieve a substantial ticket.

If I recall correctly, red diesel is 'tagged' with dye. This fuel is subsidized by the government (it's not taxed as heavily as regular diesel fuel) to aid businesses and people who qualify. It is not exactly the same as regular diesel and will damage the injectors in some diesel engines. It is meant for use as a heating oil not for vehicle fuel.

Red diesel has a dye in it that will colour the inside of the enging, to prove that it has been used. The point is the price paid for it: red diesel is net of tax, so is not for road vehicles.

I am given to understand (by farmers) that red diesel is what powers all the farmers Land Rovers (even the discoveries etc that are used as cars), it is not just restricted to 'farm' use, it is a government 'perk' for farmers. Those of you that do not live in the English countryside are probably unaware that this is WHY they use large 4x4's to go everywhere in, you would if your fuel cost what theirs does.

Originally brought in for agricultural machinery, it seems that the definitions have become somewhat blurred.

Apparently, there are even tractors and large trailers being used as lorries, competing with haulage firms that have to pay full price for their diesel.

Red diesel is used in tractors and for domestic heating and has a red dye in it, and you pay less tax, White or ordinary diesel is for cars which has a higher tax.

Red deisel is dyed red and is only intended for off road use. There really is no difference between red and clear deisel. But because deisel is used for more than trucks, they dye it to be able to tell the difference. Tractors and other farm machinery can red the red deisel because they never see a road. Therefore they shouldn't be paying road taxes on the fuel they use. Thus why it is dyed red. If a person gets caught with red deisel in a regular truck they get nailed with the federal charge of tax evasion.

Yes, one is what's called home heating "oil" and the other is considered diesel fuel. Same thing... Just don't get caught driving a commerical diesel vehicle with dye in the gas tank...
