Use a finer trowel for mosaics, 1/4" is for larger tiles. In fact, I would not have used thinset at all but waterproof adhesive instead on mosaics. The bond is stronger. The tile is small enough not to worry about cracking.

The same size I used to mortar down my 12x12 tiles!!!! I did these mosaics as borders, so it is the same. Just level it out the same as the others, and make sure to use the spacers like you do with the 12x12s.

It looks beautiful (and yes, this is my own work), and everyone who sees my borders and the tiles comment on the quality of the work and how great it looks.
