Take the air filter off, squirt a little gas down the carb..... if it starts.... fuel problem... , if it doesn't... verify that you don't have spark (take the plug out, put it back in the wire and ground it to the head and turn the engine over and watch for a blue snap)

If it starts and runs off the gas, and quits when it uses it up.... make sure gas is getting to the carb (take the fuel line off at the carb, and let it go and watch for a good flow) if it doesn't flow good.... remove the gas cap and re check.... and or replace the fuel filter if it has one (some have a mesh screen in the tank)..

(if its a diapragm style carb (IE carb mounted on gastank), clean the pickup tubes)

If its getting gas to the carb..... then it sounds like trash in the carb (clogged main jet to be more exact), take the carb off and blow it out with carb cleaner (and compressed air if ya have it) and focus a few good shots on the holes up the spot the float bowl nut goes up into.....

Now, if it never ran off the gas..... take the plug out, put your thumb over the plug hole and turn the engine backwards real fast..... its a "in the field" kinda way to tell if it has good compression...., if no spark now..... just take the kill wire off the coil (has a connector to take it off at the coil, the coil is under the shroud) and try to test for spark again..... if you get spark.... kill switch is bad (push mower its just a metal tab that grounds) if no spark still.... coil

Yea, it really could be anything.

Last week I tried to start my high wheel trimmer and found the kill switch wire was cut and grounding out on the chassis...Damn it!

Pull the plug and see/smell if there's gas on the plug. If there is, then the carb and fuel system is ok and your're missing spark or air.

With the plug out, connect it to the spark plug wire and try to start it. See that there is spark. If not, it's electrical...ugh. If there is spark, you are missing air.

Check Air cleaner.

Or it could be some really bad gasoline.

Is there gas in it? Have someone hold touch the top of the spark plug while you pull the string to see if it is getting current. It won't kill them or anything, it is about as much power as putting your tongue on a 9 volt battery... If that works, pull your plug out and put it to the wire. See if it sparks. Try new gas, check air filter and try again.

well lets see here, it wont "kick" over, you changed the spark plug and its got gas, but you still havent mentioned if it has spark or what you mean by kick over or the engine type or year but i can tell you i am certified through every major lawn mower manufactor in the world from B&S to Kawasaki to Kabota to Grass Hopper and so on, so I know lawn mowers

Sounds to me like a partially clogged carburetor - allows enough gas for starting but won't flow for running. Check air filter (change/paper, clean/foam if dirty) while you're at it. Carb probably needs cleaning - best done by lawnmower shop, but . . . you might try a little injector cleaner in the gas tank, at least use gasoline stabilizer in the future to help keep gas fresh - will help keep carb from gumming up.

set plug gap to.020, check compression, give it a shot of either from a parts house. If it tries to start clean the carb. If not check the ignition. Remove plug and leave attached to wire pull rope and watch for spark If it is blue its ok. fuel is the problem.

if the gas has been sitting for a long time in the mower or is old gas you should dump it out and refill with fresh stuff....this makes a bigger difference than you think and is usually the first thing to try when your mower won't start.

Try removing the plug and squirting a medicine dropper full of fresh gas into the hole. Replace the plug and wire and give it a tug. If it doesn't fire, it's probably the coil/engine module.

It probably has old fuel still in the system. The system gets gummed up if the fuel sits in the machine without being used, now the system has to the completely cleaned. Good Luck.
