To me, helping someone, can be done in a multitude of ways. I spend every day of my life, looking for a way to help someone.
To have compassion and empathy for people are concrete ways to help them. Some of the greatest gifts in the world, are given without money. Alot of times, simple gestures can go a long way. Maybe a friendly wave, maybe one simple glance and smile to a stranger, or maybe giving a high five to a little kid. I found, the most rewarding thing sometimes, is to just strike up a conversation. In my town, there is alot of poverty. When I am out and about, I see folks here and there with their head hung low and an expression of sadness on their face. I walk right up to them and just start talking. At first they are skeptical of me, but as I keep on talking, they see that I am just like they are. Pretty soon, their whole body language changes from droopy, to happy. When it's time for me to leave, they are smiling, and their eyes are shining. I know then, that just by making small talk, I have brightened someone's day. And it feel so awesome inside.

My best friend is going through a hard time right now with her guy. When she's down, I visit with her just to listen. When she's not expecting it, I start in with my off the wall humor. Most of the time, I see her smile, so I know at least a little of the saddness is going away.

I can't stand to see people suffer. Whatever way I can help them feel better, I do it. I don't think I could live a peaceful life if I ever stopped helping people. I think mine would become seriously stressful.

My advice to everyone, is to continually seek out ways to help others. Seek out others who need help but won't say. God looks very kindly on those who help His people when their down and out.

Make a miserable looking person, say a bored store clerk, laugh or even smile. I once brought a thanksgiving dinner plate to a convenience store clerk that was stuck working on thanksgiving, it almost made her cry. Be nice to people, there is so little of that, life is so hard and a smile can turn someones day around.

A good generic definition of "help" is to give someone something they need -- could be money, could be information, could be a ride into town when they have a flat tire, could be advice when they're not sure what they should do, etc.

To give of one's self; to assist another. There are many ways to do this. One of the most important ways, that people often overlook, is to give the gift of listening.
