for home protection the >410 gage is the easiest to handle and control, use slugs and 000 buck alternated in the magazine. the barrel should be no longer than 20 inches and the overall length not less than 28 inches. try a pistol grip and be sure to get a pump action and take the plug out of the magazine then you have 6 or 7 rounds.
