Just wondering why some people seem so dead set against tattoos. This is prompted by my mother freaking out over my debate to get one. (I won't be getting one for a few more years, I have a contract in Japan where they aren't socially acceptable. And unlike in North America, there my co-workers go to the same public baths and -do- see each other naked)

I can understand if your religion prohibits them, but mine clearly does not.

Yes, it may sag and get wrinkly when I'm 80... but when I hit 80, do you really think I'm going to be worried someone might spot the butterfly on my wrinkly bum? or will I be just enjoying the life I have left...

Unless a job or interview involves nudity, I can't imagine how having one would effect my work either.

If your tattoo is done by a reputable place, with new needles for each client, there isn't a risk for HIV or Hep either.

Anyone got a logical reason not to get one?

Would it change anyone's mind if it was a UV tattoo (that is, it glows in the dark, but in the light it can't be seen)

Jena: Just make sure you find out where an epidural for childbirth is placed, and see that none of that tattoo will go there.

How about that they aren't socially acceptable in other cultures? You already know about Japan. What is the chance that you will work in other places that have the same taboos?

How about that some people will brand you as ignorant or slutty or gang-friendly? (I know this is wrong, but reality with some folks.)

How about that you are permanenly (relatively) marking up your body, and it's costly and painful to change your mind?
I for one am entirely too flighty to decide on one design that I would be required to keep for the rest of my life. I'd hate to be branded by a fad I was later ashamed to show.

God is the One with all the answers...and in His Word, He specifically states that 'you shall not mark or cut your flesh'....a lot of what was taught to the Israelites living in Canaan and beyond was for their own protection. Pagan traditions often include things that result in bad health. Think about the practice of tattooing: using needles dipped in an unknown source of 'ink' to mark the flesh forever. Did the people have sterilization procedures for the needles? What were the needles made from? What was that ink and did it ever cause blood poisoning? Ok, so some argue that in the Old Covenant before the New Deal was purchased with Jesus' Blood that none of that applies to us anymore. How could that be? Jesus constantly referred, 'It is written'...when? Where? In the 'old covenant' called, the Law, the Torah. Jesus did not come to wipe away the Torah, He said He came to fulfil it. He is the fulfillment of the Law because He is the New Covenant.(funny, those who say the words, Old Covenant are usually the ones who are going to 'Sunday service' (the Sabbath), paying a tithe (Jesus abhorred the Tithe), and have a pastor who is acting like a priest. The book of Hebrews says that Jesus is our ONLY priest. Today still, poisoning of the blood occurs from impure practices. It's not about 'adorning ourselves' (like the brick edifices have stained glass windows) because Paul specifically stated that our beauty is not from adornment but from what is inside us: His Love. Is God AGAINST Tattooing and cutting the flesh? If He is the One who designed, purchased and then re-purchased the Temple, don't you think He has the right to say how it should be?

As long as the tattoo person uses a new needle there is no Chance of getting a HIV that way. Tattoos are no really bad but you have to make a commitment to it for a loooooong time, like your whole life. That's why i would never get one, but if you want that ta too for the rest of your life, than you can get one, if your over 18 without parent permission.

On the rare occasions I've thought it would be a really good idea to get a tattoo, I've always been drunk and in places where it's not possible to get them.

I'm not against them as such but I know lots of people who have them who acted in haste and repent at leasure.

If your minds made up and you're certain about it then why not it's your body after all!

Because we can't help but think about what kind of sick masochistic freak would go through that much physical pain for aesthetics. There, I said it.

Wherever you go and whatever you do in life, you'll always find people who agree and people who don't agree with you. Do what you need to do with the total belief that it's right for you and there's no argument.

I guess they are jealous because some of us have the artistic view that they are not equipped with. They are a form expression. I love them.
