A)Atach your hard disc to another computer as slave.
1.Start Administrative tools.
2.Click on Storage.
3.Click on Disk Management.
4.On bottom middle you shoul see Disc 0, Disc 1,etc. right click your hard disc and click format. (DO NOT RIGHT CLICK YOUR VOLUME LABEL, BECAUSE THOSE ARE JUST PARTITIONS).
B)Get a bootable formating software.

with todays systems, you would only want to format your "C" drive. If you format your "D" drive, you'll never be able to restore your system since that is where the backup is kept. I know, I made that mistake on my first pc.

The best thing for you to do, if you are using Win XP, is to do a System Recover, either full or non-destructive. Either way, you'll get your system back to factory settings.

Use the full System Recovery if you want to get rid of all installed programs - that will wipe everything out and make your system start up just as it did when you first started your computer.

If you are using anything but XP, I think the only way to resent back to factory setting is to format and reinstall your operating system.

put your Startup disk in the 3.5 drive and turn on your computer.
when it comes to the prompt,
Type in a:/format c:

after formatting, restart with the startup disk in the 3.5 drive. Have your Operating system disk ready.

Are you attempting to re-install your operating system?

Why are you trying to format your hard drive?

How are you attempting to format your hard drive?

Did you insert the WinXP install cd and boot from it, do a clean install?

Your Bios might have changed somehow, check it to see if it's thinking the drive is small, select auto detect.

It sounds like that is the recovery partition on the hard drive. Something happened to your other partition...contact your computer manufacturer and they will help you troubleshoot.
