Depends how small. Personally several cans of spray paint cost more than just buying a gallon of exterior paint, and a cheap paintbrush. Use the latex variety -- they won't require the horribly messy and dangerous chemicals, and the brush can be rinsed and reused after finishing your project easily. I can assure you this will be cheapest in the long run, and provide the most even coating.

Canned spray paint is generally not very good at covering large open surfaces. Regular paint will generally be more effective. If you get a paint sprayer though and use a normal latex or oil based paint it is usually more effective than rolling, brushing or canned spray paint.
