A horn that runs on air pressure. Haven't you ever see the shiny chromed air horns on the top of tractor trailer trucks? I know you have heard a locomotive horn at road crossings. That is an air horn.

An air horn is a horn that creates sound by a blast of air passing through the Horn system, oppose to electric current. Air horns are much loader, the sound carries farther: that is why ships, big rig trucks, trains all use air horns. You can buy an air horn mounted on an can of con pressed air, some people use this type at sport events, many boaters carry these as an back up system in case of trouble.Hope this helps! A tron-bone is in fact a type of air horn, may be this will give you a better idea of what they are!

An air horn is basically a trumpet powered by compressed air. I'm pretty sure most car horns use a speaker, but an air horn works by sending compressed air into a horn - or, more often several horns. They are common on semi trucks and locomotives.
