Depends what you are doing on the laptop.

AT LEAST 256mb, preferably 512mb for general tasks and light gaming.

If you're playing the latest games or intend to, go for at least 1gb.

(Bear in mind 256mb will probably end up more like 192mb by the time the shared video ram has been nicked)

The more ram you have the longer your batter will last on a laptop because the hard drive (a large power sucker) will be used less. For laptop specs that you can use to purchase a computer, check out http://comprec.com

A Mimumum of 512 MBytes

I would recommend 1GB but more if you intend doing really intensive tasks such as software development, audio or video editing or the need to run loads of programs at the same time.

I reccomend at the VERY least 512 mb. If you do anything like gaming, photo/video editing, or multi-tasking you'r gonna want probably 1gb+.
