You'd be interested to know that my husband went to high school with him (Lisbon Falls, ME) and was in band with him. He was NOT as freaky as you would beleive. Very smart and very generous. He and Tabitha donated a LIBRARY, a whole library.

I love his short stories the best. The Green Mile, Night Shift, Skeleton Crew and the Stand are my favourites. Tabitha writes some very lovely stories.

My favorite Stephen King books are the "Dark Tower" series (there are 7 of them). His earlier books seem to be better, like "Carrie," "Salem's Lot," "The Shining," and "The Dead Zone." Both "The Stand" and "It" were excellent but VERY long. He also did a medieval fantasy called "The Eyes of the Dragon" that was very good. Some I did NOT like include "Dreamcatcher," "The Tommyknockers," "Rose Madder," "Gerald's Game," and "Cell." Stephen King has also co-written a couple of books with Peter Straub that were very good, and Peter Straub is a darn good horror writer himself. If you're into horror, check out Clive Barker too.

As a teenager, I read Stephen King A LOT!!! But as I've got older I can't read his books anymore because I get freaked out! How weird is that! I loved The Stand, Salem's Lot, Misery, Carrie. I have a whole load I haven't read yet - maybe I will when I'm 60!

My favorite King books are:
Salems Lot
Christine
Hearts in Atlantis
I like most of his books except the fantasy ones-dark tower, wastelands, ect. I think his worst book was Gerald's Game. a couple of authors you might like are, Bentley Little, and Michael McDowell(deceased) he wrote some great books. Stephen King's wife,Tabitha, writes good too. She has a new book out called Candles Burning, by her and Michael McDowell. He died before he could finish it.Think you would like it.

Rose Madder, Hearts in Atlantis, Everthings Eventual and Different Seasons. Another good author is Dean Koontz (similar to King, I think)

His best work is THE SHINING. Dean Koontz is another author you would like. His work is creepy and scary but is always loaded with human emotions and more often than not a great romantic sub-plot. Deans best (and scariest) book is Twilight Eyes. It yanks you into the story and the hero's strange world on page one and you wonder for a long time if he is actually psycotic.

Misery and Needful Things. Both excellent books. But really, anything of his earlier works. I'm not a big fan of his newer stuff. Also, I think his worst book is Dreamcatchers. Well written, but he resorts to blood and gore, and while his other works have some of that included, not like this one. He resorts to "shitweasels". Seems like he turned into kid playing with his buddies, seeing who could gross each other out the most.

I love Stephen King, and Dean Koontz is similar and also really great read. His style is a bit less far-fetched than King, a bit more like real life.

His earlier works were better, and, I'm waiting for the last of the Tower series.. if I haven't already missed them
Living or dead, on that last part?
I would say most of the science fiction writers, Asimov, Heinlein, Bradbury..
Lovecraft for horror..
L'Amour for western genre..

I really loved "'Salem's Lot" and "Hearts in Atlantis". You might also want to consider Robert McCammon. Awesome author, try "Boy's Life" , "Gone South", and "Swan Song" which is similar to King's "The Stand".
