By walking your walk and talking your talk. Having integrity meaning what you say and doing what you say are your principles, being respectful of yourself as well as others. Taking responsibility for your actions and your words and going thru the consequences gracefully. Believing in something bigger than yourself. Not belittling or looking down at someone who is has a different opinion than your's , or is different from you in some way. Treating people the way you'd want to be treated yourself, so being kind to people not for personal gain but because it just feels so much better than being mean. Volunteering your time in your community, giving back in some way . Being grateful for what you have and showing that appreciation. That's what having good character means. It's NOT how much money you have or what in things you have or where you live or who your family is.

A person with good character would be one that always does "the right thing" meaning they do the honest thing, the best job they can do on a task, and they are a person that people know they can tell/discuss something in confidence (a secret) and it will never be repeated. Having the above three "characteristics" would make you a person of good character.

Be honest.
Be respectful.
Be understanding.
Be willing to work hard.
Be willing to accept, and learn from, defeat.
Be strong in your convictions.
Don't kick puppies or children.
Fly an American flag.
Buy dinner for your friends "just because you want to."
The bottom line is character is necessary to be a good person. If you're a good person, you've already fought the battle. Now just fine-tune it.

Look pass your own needs and see the world around you. Once you realize what the world needs, you will automatically change into a good character.
