In America, it took Shay's Rebellion (a rebellion over taxes and the failure of the government to enforce them since no states felt like providing troops). The states agreed that it was not tenable to continue that way and agreed to surrender some of their power to the federal government in exchange for the benefits of the union.

What will it take for European nations to surrender some of their national sovereignty to the greater good of the European Union?

Very much so. But there are differences.

In the US, each state was not capable of functioning as its own independent government. It didn't have the resources. In Europe, that's generally not the case.

Actually, it's more like the Confederacy that led to the US Civil War. The EU central government is primarily advisory, and provides minimal infrastructure, while the member-states each run things internally as they think best.

If you've read the latest EU Constitution of 2003, it clearly states that all countries who sign have surrendered their sovereignty to the EU Parliament.

That being the case, there is a huge difference between the US and the EU. In the US, the citizens of the states weren't decieved into what they were getting. They knew that there would be federal control governing the individual states.

In the case of the EU, most citizens were led to believe that it was primarily a trade agreement and that it would be good for business. The fact that the EU Parliemant would completely supercede the sovereignty of the European nations was never broadly announced to the European people. They ended up buying into something that was a lie and a deception in order to gain their support.

The deception continues today because the majority are still unaware, even though it's plainly written in the EU Constitution's introductory section.

They think they are the United States of Europe but the EU constituion is designed to make them more of a Soviet Union of Europe. I think the iron curtain fell because there was no difference on either side of it.

I think it will fall apart. It was mainly a scam by France and Germany to run the rest of Europe. I think the rest of Europe is too independent to allow that.

The EU will not ratify a composite constitution because the 25 members are so different culturally, historically, politically, ethnically, and socially. And they are not willing to give up any of their rights because they're so nationalistic over there.
