Mommy2sav... Lemme guess, you call your husband to change your flat tire too, and believe the mechanic with doe eyed innocence when he charges you a grand for repairs, half of which you're being double charged labor time or don't need done at all. A retarded monkey can do a tune up. You probably pay through the nose to have your struts/shocks changed every 50,000 miles too, even though unless you’re an obese cow hitting potholes at full speed, they’ll last much longer. 250,000 miles on original struts and no signs on the tires (feathering/cupping) or excessive oscillation.

Appropriate spark plug socket, 6" extension, ratchet, spark plugs, wires, distributor cap/rotor if equipped (most imports have a distributor, not too many domestics come with it), wire brush if you have coil packs to clean the corrosion off the coils, air filter, fuel filter (don’t forget to relieve fuel line pressure) and an oil change (filter, appropriate amount of oil) is a good, thorough tune-up.

What these guys are saying are good, EXCEPT for Mommy2 ... girl I can do my own tune ups and I'm no mechanic ...
If in doubt, ask your mechanic what you'll need, but usually spark plugs, spark plug wires, air, fuel and oil filters, and an oil change (though the oil change should occur more regularly than your tune up), etc.

A good set of wrenchs, various sizes and types of screwdrivers and some pliers would be good. You will need to change the sparkplugs and sparkplug wires. You should change your distributer cap and rotor button. You should also change your air filter. What you really need to do is find the maintenance book for your car. Most places like Pep Boys should carry one, or even some book stores. Or look on Ebay. The maintenance book should list the recommended procedure for your car's tune up.

If your doing a minor tune, you will need a set of spark plugs. If its a major tune up, spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor cap & rotor if equipped. You will need a spark plug socket, either 5/8 or 3/4. Various extensions and ratchet and plenty of time...I also will clean the throttle body (if equipped) with a tooth brush and can of carburetor cleaner..

plugs, wires, air filter, oil filter, oil, and fuel filter. thats about all you can do. i would also suggest that about every 1500 miles, get a bottle of b12 carb cleaner and dump whole bottle in a half tank of gas and run until you have to get more gas. this cleans your fuel lines and injectors to keep them from clogging up and also gets you better gas mileage.
