I used to wonder the same thing until I got one free with my wife's laptop... now I love it. I carry around all of my CDs in my pocket... it is the best thing ever. I have the video iPod, so I can also watch movies, videos, etc if I choose.
iPod isn't the only great MP3 player on the market, of course, just the most widely used (due to superb marketing).

You got me...I dont have one and my grandma came down to visit about 2 months ago and wanted me to bring her to Best Buy so she could buy an IPOD. I decided then and there that I am the un-coolest person ever. I dont have one, but my grandma does. Thats ok, it keeps her entertained, especially when she sees the expression on my face when she starts talking about iTUNES, and what she is and isnt downloading onto her IPOD the next time around.

i own 6 apple ipods, they're cool, and fun to listen to. plus they're smaller than a walkman, and u dont have to carry it, u can put in your pocket but a walkman could never fit in ur poket

they are a great way to store all those cds you have in your house, it may just seem like a fashion trend, but they serve a bigger purpose (Ex: Storage space, creating fun playlists, listening to it wherever you want)

iPod sound quality is rather bad. iRiver are a much better alternative in Hifi sound quality terms... so I think iPod's get so much coverage because of their simplicity and non-techie usability.
