Pantsuit or a blouse and a skirt. Nothing formal. But no t-shirts.

You can never go wrong with a little black dress, but if it's a hip, modern-type museum and the invitation specifically said casual, it would be OK to wear dark denim jeans, heels, and a satiny or beaded top - very LA.

Since you're going to be in an artsy environment, you'll need class with a hint of edge. Wear a little black dress with red or brightly colored pumps and a bold necklace or khaki pants, brown pumps, and a silk top with-again- a bold choice of jewelry and purse.

Go with a black dress, something modern and, since it is an art showing, maybe something that has a sophisticated feel to it.

No jeans or t-shirts. A little bit dressier than you'd dress for work, but not as dressy as a black tie affair. Have fun!
