I think around thirty I started referring to young people as "those kids" and some of the lingo I'd hear sounded foreign to me.

Also, I'm 34 now, see the 80's clothing coming back in style and CAN'T believe it! Please tell me Mullets and Big hair isn't coming back!

By the way, I'm married with a child and am NOT trying to be hip, just wondering if anyone else felt they kind of were out of the loop with the younger generation.

I started to feel it at 27........ when I began hollering at the neighborhood kids to stop loitering on the corner and stop talking to strangers!! Seriously, I chased away a 40 year old man talking to some 14 year old by threatening to call the police... and then their mothers!!

Hey- I'm 15, and I'm still waiting to START being hip- and most of my friends agree with you on the 80s coming back. Personally, I think we kids should be grateful we didn't have to experience the horrible fashion of the 80s firsthand.

In an attempt to actually answer your question though, I think of any adult under 40 as fairly young, but I don't think that has anything to do with being "hip". Of course, hehe... the word hip is slightly confusing to me. You either mean trendy, which is how I think of hip, or cool. If you mean cool- the coolest person I ever met was a 70 year old pervert. She seriously scarred me for life- but it made for a great anecdote. I hope when I'm that old and living in some nursing home, I can corrupt the minds of young children as well.

Well, being 17 myself, I can honestly say that there is no age limit to becoming unhip, it's all about region, connections, and things like that. I mean, my mother is looked upon as cool by just about everyone that I know. What you like and don't like is what makes you you, hip or not. If you feel disconnected from the teens of today, it's best to stay that way, saves you a lot of embarrassment, because believe me, if you try too hard, they'll tear you apart.

You don't have to become "unhip" or "uncool" at any age.
But I do think when some people get into their 50's &60's & TRY to act really cool & hip & only act like asshole's !
I have an Aunt that is 74 years old & wears mini skirts, way too tight & tight blouses so her boobs bulge, looks so ridiculous.

If being 'hip' is part of being thrown in the same bag as "those kids", can I be excused?
I'd rather be labeled as "unhip" than be guilty by association. Hah!

I'll pass on the Mullets.
The sequel for big hair has already launched.

Hey, I'm with you there about hating the 80's, I am 28 and also feeling "Unhip"...I think it happened sometime early on in college for me, maybe 20ish!

I'm stuck in the mid-90's, I've came to that conclusion!

It's all a state of mind. I feel much younger than my age but I bet teenage kids look at me and think I am an old dude.

BTW, mullets rock! I hope they make a comeback.

A mature person doesn't need to worry about being "hip", develop your own style. There's no need to follow the crowd. It's only the immature ones who feel the need to impress their peers.

being hip or unhip has nothing to do with age - it's all in the attitude, baby!
